Polar Bears and Sharks

The scientific experiments they had on the polar bears, sharks etc. was always a bit of a puzzle to me.....

What if the reason they have polar bears, sharks and other animals (like the weird bird) on the island is because in the future they are extinct?

Polar Bears due to global warming
Sharks due to over-hunting due to their reputation
Bird due to whatever, before our time?
Etc....

Sort of like the Star Trek movie when they go back in time and bring two whales back with them to save earth.

Maybe Dharma really was trying to save the world. If we take the Sri Lanka video (http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Sri_Lanka_Video) as canon. It could be that all the various experiments (incidents) had something to do with trying to save the world. The nuclear,chemical and biological warfare, conventional warfare, pandemic, over-population mentioned in it were the various ways mankind could possible destroy themselves. It could be that various experiments were done to try and prevent them. Possibly including the whole time travel thing. Maybe Dharma (or the people in charge) used the island to travel to the past to work on one or more of these experiments and see how it plays out in the future. If it doesn't work, they go back try it again or try something else. Juliet setting the bomb off could have possibly been another attempt by Dharma to see how nuclear disaster could be prevented or at least survivable.

Maybe all the animals were used to see how they evolved or what would happened to them in the result that humans were no longer around.

Could quite possibly explain why things such as babies not being carried to full term on the island, if its a result of an experiment in population control. The quarantine and injections a result of pandemic experimenation, and so on. This has probably been brought up before though.
