When John Locke is killed by Ben and his body, known as Jeremy Benthem, is found in Los Angeles, it goes to a funeral home. Jack reads the obituary in the newspaper and is very upset. He goes to the funeral home. Okay, so what you say. When Jack is there looking at the coffin the funeral directory comes out and asks if Jack is family or friend to which Jack replies neither or either. That doesn't really matter to me. What I found interesting, knowing what we now know, is that there was NO FUNERAL just a VIEWING. Why? Does anyone have an idea why there would be no funeral for someone but just a viewing? It was a private funeral home. If a body is found and there are no known relatives usually the county takes over. And this is something that always happens when someone dies without a doctor present. Since they believed that Locke committed suicide, normally there would have been an autopsy scheduled and the body would not be released to a funeral home until the cause of death was confirmed. There is no funeral and no viewing at all. In this case, his body went to a private, albeit cheap, funeral home and had no funeral, just the viewing? Do you think that Ben manipulated all of this as well? I don't know if he could have done it alone. He would have at least needed the help of the Others, like the ones at the butcher shop that stored the body.
Anyone have any ideas about all this? And how does the nemesis fit into this?

Well we've speculated plenty about the "off island others." I definitely think Ben set up the viewing at the Hoffs Drawler to see if any of the O6 would come calling. You noticed they had little trouble taking a body, then hiding it at a butcher shop for a few days, then getting it loaded on that plane.

seems to me, you steal a body, the funeral home might just think to report that? so yes, i think it was a definite setup. it's more than likely that Eloise Hawking helped Ben with this end. He may have gone to her after killing Locke and the two concocted the whole scheme to lure in the O6.

as for nemesis role in this...well the only thought i have is that however the "off island others" (i'll call them OIOs) are contacted and given instruction, it could have been done under the guise of jacobs orders....but of course, not actually have come from Jacob. Nemesis could be pulling strings from the island to those means. We know (or can reasonably speculate i should say) that someone has been back to the radio tower, since the numbers were playing again, and i think it reasonable that someone could have been Nemesis. He could very well have been broadcasting orders off island.

rebuttal? agree?

So, it was nothing more than a set up to get any of the 06's attention? Did you know that Ben and John Locke said the exact same thing....again....This is the second time that I have found two things that they both have said at different times of each other. John Locke had been so ademant telling Jack that they shouldn't leave the island in season 4, right? It was his big thing. Well, watched a rerun last night from the end of season 3 in Through the Looking Glass, that Ben said the exact same thing to Jack! The first thing was a remark about smokie and not having a name for it. Hmmmm......

A. There was no funeral because Ben and Jack stole the body. A viewing always happens before the funeral. The viewing is a way to see the body and say goodbye, and then the funeral is part of the procession to bury it. So there's no reason to speculate that there would not have been a funeral if there was a viewing.

B. No need for an autopsy when you find a body that no one claims hanging from the ceiling. I think the only reason you would do an autopsy on an unclaimed body is when they are found dead without a reason. If you find a dead guy hanging by his neck you don't need an autopsy to find out that he hung himself.

Sorry Ort, you are wrong on both counts. First of all, when Jack was at the funeral home and the director walked out Jack asked him if he missed the funeral because no one was there. The director said there was NO FUNERAL JUST A VIEWING. And Ben and Jack did not take the body until after the viewing. If there was to be a funeral the director would have told Jack something to the effect that today is the viewing and the funeral is tomorrow or a week from next Tuesday or whatever.
Now, as far as your second point. You are completly wrong about this. Anytime a body is found, or when a person dies without a medical person present at the time of death an autopsy is performed. Period. This is done for a few reasons, the first being the establish the cause and time of death and then to also rule out foul play. There are more reasons but those are the most pertanent to our story and this discussion. And this is something that always happens.

I think a lot of the time the writers just create these situations on move to the next plot point leaving it to the viewers to fill in their own blanks.

Eloise Hawking had to have some major involment after Johns death. How else would she have obtained the suicide note that Locke had written to Jack? Who is to say that anyone from the 'real world' even found John hanging? Perhaps after Ben left him in the hotel room, he went to Eloise and then she quarterbacked everything after that to set up what we have seen in relation to the viewing and funeral home. It seemed way too easy for them to take Johns body and then get him on an airplane to Guam.
