I know why Libby was in the mental hospital because she was on the balcony that Hurley stepped on. She was one of the people that died, at first. Since Hurley is so special Jacob knew the anti-Jacob would probably try to get rid of him. He found a caring, psychiatrist and knew she would work to keep Hurley. Her husband was probably on the balcony and he did die, which made her crazy. Jacob healed Libby so she could help keep Hurley alive on the Island.

That's a great theory! I think that TPTB have said we weren't going to get any finality to Libby's story so I'm sticking with this idea. Very nice!

go watch the most recent interviews (if my brain was working i'd tell you which one) but def this month, and its a video. damon said what the libby story was, no big deal: she went crazy when her husband died and was institutionalied at santa rosa. six degrees of seperation. then she got out and gave des the boat. thats it.

Exactly, but that is exactly what i said, but much more important to the plot.

first off, TPTB can say that she wasnt important and try and play it off, but who really knows? They may just be saying that because they killed her off after her DWI. They did ask her to come back and do some more filming ,but she shot them down cause she didnt like the way they killed her off out of nowhere. She was pissed. So there may have been more to her story then they want to lead on...
But I am still sticking with my original theory on her- She was working for someone.Possibly widmore or the other side. And she was placed in the mental ward to keep up with Hurley. Then she placed in a position to help get Des to the island by giving him the boat(what a coincidence she is in the coffee shop, with a boat to spare)

You're confusing coincidence with destiny. There are a crap load of instances that could be called coincidences, but really it's destiny pushing everyone in the same direction. If they are serious by saying Libby's storyline is over, then it's clear they had to give up on it, due to her being fired.
What I mean is many characters have shaped the Losties destinys despite never setting foot on the island, so if Libby's part was only to give Desmondo the boat, then why was she brought to the island? I surmise that Libby would have had an important part to play, but they had to scrap once she got fired.
Oh and no way was Libby planted in Santa Rosa to spy on Hugo. She was clearly in their due to mental issues.

I have never really thought of some of the things you guys mentioned, that I like. Libby was important because she did save Hurley. If Hurley would have jumped then alot of things would have changed given the heavy involvment of his character in shaping the island's events....both past and present. I am a little confused on the timeline of things but this is what I would like to believe until informed otherwise:
1. Libby's husband dies.
2. Libby meets Desmond and gives him the boat (this would have to be no later than 2001 since Des was on the island for 3 years).
3. Now - there has to be more history to Des and Libby than the coffee shop....for crying out loud you give the guy a $40,000.00 boat....common sense says they stayed in touch. Libby is crushed when she finds out Des is lost at sea and blames herself for giving Des the boat.
4. The death of her husband and guilt with Des lands her in the mental hospital. This would be sometime after 2001.
5. Libby and Hurley are in the same hospital. Two scenerios.....Libby knew Hurley and pretended she didn't or truthfully didn't remember him.
6. Libby and Hurley get out and eventually meet up on the island.
It would be cool to learn that Libby was working for someone and was in on the plan all along with the above or was not in on it completely but was guided throught it.

Im totally with you on the Libby matter and everytime she is brought up in discussion it goes straight to her story is going no further. But I still think she will play some type of role in spirt, whether we see her in the last episode with Hurley or just a simple calling of her name.
This is my prediction for Libby's role: I think she is the daughter of someone on the Island maybe even Jacobs in one senerio.
But the one I am banking on is that she was apart of Ilana and Cesear's group from 316, they know everything about the Island and she was already there. I can see Ilana asking what happened to Libby in season 6.
