First off I want to say this is my first posting. I've been reading all of the theories posted in this forum. Many of them make a lot of sense, but in reading them all I've come up with my own theory. I believe that the island is Purgatory. People have pointed out that when someone resolves their issue on the island they die. I think they have finally atoned themselves and can move on in the afterlife. Those who like Walt and the O6 make it back to the real world don't die, but merely had a near death experience.

Purgatory (Lat., "purgare", to make clean, to purify) in accordance with Catholic teaching is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are, not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions.

What do you all think?

Yes TPTB said it is NOT purgatory at all and they said it was a fact

Gary Troup is an anagram for Purgatory, but , TPTB just enjoy anagrams.

I've always loved the Purgatory theory, and know TPTB debunked it, BUT, if it really was Purgatory, wouldn't TPTB debunk the theory anyway? They're not gonna come out in Season 1 or 2 and say, yea, that's it, you guessed right! No, they're gonna debunk it so that everyone can keep guessing.

Well, they did say it wasn't something as simple as that. It is supposed to be huge. Besides, they are not going to ever say exactly what the island is. They have said that we just have to accept that it is there and is what it is. So, I think purgatory is really a wash. Sorry.

Yea, the more I think about it, it probably is not Purgatory. But it may just be very much "like" a purgatory - the show has alot of the same ingredients: good vs evil, redemption, judgement, etc.

Purgatory is one of my favorite theories. It makes a lot of sense and I don't think it is a "cheap" or "easy" explanation but the writers did say it wasn't purgatory. Also leaving the island kind of broke this theory I think. It doesn't seem normal to go to purgatory then leave then come back but then again I am not sure what is normal for such a place.
