I was telling notso the other night about how when we were first watching, we had some catching up to do. As soon as we got to an ep that talked about electromagnetism, my son (who was barely 12 at the time) said "That monster is powdered metal, isn't it? It's controlled with magnets. That's why it makes those noises and why it can look like smoke and still be able to grab things and knock down trees"

Then we stared at him until he said "What?"

Notso mentioned MRI.... and after the board went down, I started thinking about how when the monster first started knocking trees around, Rose said "that sounds so familiar" Rose had cancer. She must have had an MRI.

Scroll down. Listen to sample 2.

Also... this is a page full of music made by sampling MRI recordings. Some of them sound very like the music when the smoke monster shows up.

WOW!!! I think you need to thank you son and give him another great big hug! Seems like we may be onto something! That sample #2 sounded like the chain noise you hear from smokie! The music was sooooo cool.

They've said they used a cab meter, but if they told us it was an MRI, we'd have all said... MRI... Electromagnet... Metal filings! And then no one would believe that smokey was a monster or that it might be taking the form of dead people or any of that. Heh. It's not like they've never lied or mislead us before.

No, that part of the sound was the receipt printer from a taxi. For sure. But the smoke monster makes lots of different sounds and one of them is just like that second sample you linked to.

MRIs make a lot of different sounds. The other sample sounds very different. I've had an MRI before and been there when my kid had his. LOTS of noise. Different buzzes and clicks and thunks and hums.

Don't remember the episode, but the scene with Locke getting chewed out by Randy in Lockes cubicle, the adding machine was sounding a bit like the noises Smokey makes as well.

Yup! Verified fact. JL's adding machine on his desk in the box factory made smokie sounds.

Nice theory, although I kinda hope it's not true. I would have a few problems with it. One of which would be how would these metal shavings be manipulated in such a way yet the metal all around the island wouldn't?

Although, at this point, I am not sure any answer we get would really be truly satisfactory anyway. :)

Anyone here old enough to remember a kids toy that was kinda like an Etch-A-Sketch but had a blank face and metal shavings? You used a magnet from underneath to move the metal shavings around to make the face? That's what I thought of with this theory also. Smokie moves like those metal shavings did! lol!

It might explain some things but surely doesnt explain its intelligence and ability to flash images in it. Also, the strong magnetic pull that an MRI has with the magnetic field would influence any metal they would have in or on their bodies. I also like to know how it flashes images or turns into apparitions

If this is how it works, the images are the same as the toy notso is talking about. As far as the 'ghosts' are concerned, I've said in other threads that I think they are something else.

Rewatched the scene with Ben getting judged. The scenes look like some sort of projection, but I don't know how that would work.

One thing I have noticed, though. None of the 'ghosts' are ever seen coming from the smoke or turning into smoke. They're there, then they're not. Or they walk up and then walk away. They never form or break up into smoke.

I remember thoughs. I see them in supermarkets now costing like 99 cents but when I was a kid it was high tech. Like my commador computer. But what if the monster was metal shavings that dharma created to use against the others and Ben took control over it. It would at least explain something right?
