You may have noticed some changes in our little forum. They are nice improvements and I think we will all have a bit more fun. Check out your profile page and look for the goodies.

While you are there, please scroll all the way down the page and look to the left on bottom. You will notice a link called "Forum Rules." So, we now have established, written guidelines from the admin. It is a welcomed relief. This is what it says:

"LOST.COM Forums Rules
Although the administrators and moderators of LOST.COM Forums will attempt to keep all objectionable messages off this forum, it is impossible for us to review all messages. All messages express the views of the author, and neither the owners of LOST.COM Forums, nor Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. (developers of vBulletin) will be held responsible for the content of any message.

By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.

The owners of LOST.COM Forums reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any thread for any reason."

There is also a little area now for the admin and mods to hand out infractions when and if necessary. There is a point system that I will have to find out more about. The infractions are warnings that last for ten days along with one point. I will check into exactly what this is and how it works with the admin. I think the rules are pretty explicit now and quite clear so we all know what to expect. If anyone has any questions please pm me and I will try to get the answer for you.

We are here to have fun and discuss LOST, so let's enjoy it!

Thats pretty wide. Not Sexually-oriented means the entire Boobie station thread is coming down then?

I think that goes along the lines of nude pictures and talk of a sexual nature, Not that I think you would be breaking the rules if you were to refer ot one of the cast members as "Hott" "Sexy" or whatever just not what you would love to do with them perhaps.

i think those rules were created by vBulletin and just appeared as part of the update process. If they said every fourth person must cluck like a chicken before clicking submit it would have just stayed there.

but these rules seem vague and it says that any post can be deleted at any time for any reason or no reason at all. therefore i conclude that we should just post whatever we want and if it's a problem someone will delete it.

the only loop hole is that the guidelines say they cannot realistically review every single message. therefore i conclude the best thing to do is to start swearing and posting pornography in every single post. that way some stuff will make it through the cracks.

whose with me on this?

IDK Baxie, there is an infraction system in place also. I don't know how many infractions/warnings/points it takes to get perminantly shut down. You wanna be the first to test it and find out? All I can say is go for it then. This forum is about LOST and not the place for people to look at semi-nude photos or to post such colorful jokes. There are places on the internet that are appropriate for that. I don't have a problem with that but do it where it belongs. It doesn't belong here and that is obvious by the rules now. This is not a democracy, this forum belongs to the admin and it is his call to make and no one elses.

yes lets just reiterate - the forum belongs to admin.

so we wont be catching you in any idle lost free chit chat from now on notso?

shame - thats what made this forum such a great place in the first place, people could talk lost on ANY level, be that scientific, spiritually or even the soap opera aspects and we could bring our own life experiences into it and get to know one another. being human, conversation naturally digresses and we have all come to realise that if we are going to do anything not lost related (say the hotseat for example) is done on GENERAL DISCUSSION.

Admin has never had an issue before and I don't even see him having an issue at the moment - I do however see one mod interpreting the rules her way (they are not exactly clear, lets face it what is vulgar to one person may not be to the next) and making decisions based on that and her own personal opinions/feelings.

You know, you are really funny. No one is denying your ability to discuss LOST on any level, be it scientific, spiritually or even with soap opera aspects or preventing you from bringing your life experiences into it. What the rules say is clear....you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.

I don't understand what is not clear about any of that. And as to your comments about idle lost free chit chat, as long as this chit chat does not violate the rules then there is reason not to do it. Look, we all have new boundaries and I know that it is not going to be easy for some people here to have these boundaries. But, there is nothing wrong with what the rules say. I don't want a smutty forum and I am sure there are many other people that agree. I say that as a poster and not a mod. As I said, this forum belongs to the admin and we are visiting here so I will respect his rules and abide by them. It's really not all that difficult to do.

I don't understand what is not clear about any of that.

Everything. For that to be some sort of legally binding statement they would have to go on to clearly define each of those terms:

obscene
vulgar
sexually-oriented
hateful
threatening

Each of us has a different interpretations of these word so for us to follow the site owner's rules we must understand his definition of these terms. Furthermore, we have to agree to these terms BEFORE we sign up. Otherwise there's just confusion and frustration like there is now.

EDIT: And actually, if there has been some change in the Terms of Service then for that to apply we each should be getting some kind of message that we need to agree before we proceed. I always get letters in the mail anytime my bank makes some obscure change in the agreement. Let's face it, this site is not run by a huge conglomerate corporation with tons of lawyers at their disposal. It's a mom and pop type site so there has to be some kind of slack given to all of us. The community here understands what is socially acceptable and the mods just need to make sure it's a safe place and everyone is comfortable. We don't need some forum nazi making us adhere to every letter of the law, especially since that law is very vague.

Or maybe he is being patient with you hoping you will catch on that being a Mod doesnt make you any better than any other person on here that posts. Lissa Marie certainy knows this and demonstrates this. Not that some have thought she deleted things they thought didnt need to be but she doesnt think all high and mighty of herself. As far as I been a member of this forum she has always been "one of us". Since you became a mod, you think you are the king of the castle. Your posts on another forum demonstrates this as well. unless of course someone else uses Notsolost42 on that forum. But as you say, I am just a disgruntled poster.

first of all I have no quest with anyone. I said I would send a note to the admin about you because I thought you were starting to overstep your bounds as moderator but I don't really think talking to the admin would do anything anyway. Actually I don't really like that guy so far. however i think there are a few people here who would agree with me on this issue.

second, i don't want this to become personal. to be honest I like you personally and I love your um.... gusto? i don't know what the word is.

but I don't think I need to go through all of your definitions. i'll just pick the first which says obscene means "disgusting to the senses". what is disgusting to me is not necessarily what is disgusting to you. some people love fish and some people find it repulsive. all of these terms have the same issue. like I said, a legally binding statement would have to go on to define the site owner's definition of these terms. the problem is you are now trying to vigorously enforce a law that is vague and unfair. either update the rules (probably not going to happen soon) or exercise some common sense.

I am not trying to make a federal case out of this either Baxie and I like you personally as well. I think the word you are looking for, as one NY'er to another, is "chutzpah." lol.

As far as the definitions are concerned and your example, if you do read it please refer to this:

2 a : abhorrent to morality or virtue; specifically : designed to incite to lust or depravity b : containing or being language regarded as taboo in polite usage

The operative words are taboo in polite usage. I know you are an intelligent guy Baxie and you also love to stir the pot sometimes. I think that you do have some serious concerns though and I am not trying to be dismissive to your points. I know you understand what these words mean and the context in which they apply to the rules. Let's just give it a try. I don't want to sanitize the forum. The forum has great character and personality and no one is trying to change that. I think that we can still have the same forum by using some common sense about what is being posted, that's all. Geeez, sometimes trying to make a point here is like trying to elbow your way into a subway car at 5:00 pm! Love ya guy!

I don't know if they did it in Scotland, but when the Beatles first came out with the song Satisfaction, the censors here in the 60's changed a word in it when it was broadcast on television and radio. The part sung about "....just trying to get some girl pregnant" had been changed and the word pregnant was removed. That was during the height of the 60's cultural revolution and huge social divisions in the US.

i think you guys are on to something. whenever someone says something bad the mods can come in and alter it the same way they dub curse words on tv. instead of saying tpbaxter can f*** himself, fix it to say "tpbaxter can fudge himself". then no one would know. replace sh*t with sugar, etc.

same for objectionable photos. remove the bad picture and put a suggestive picture that is deemed appropriate instead. so instead of trish stratus you'll get eleanor roosevelt in a 1930s one piece bathing suit. no one will ever know the difference!

It all seems so simple too, doesn't it Jelena?
I fully understand the whole offensive thing, and deleting what posts or words need to be deleted.
I agree too that my "Goat Joke" probably should have been deleted too. I knew when I posted it, that it was going to probably happen; but I figured that I had limited it to only be offensive to one person, who I knew wouldn't be offended.
I was actually more worried about creeping bax out and having him think I was making advances than I was of offending him.

What I don't understand is all the controversy over the Boobie/Butt threads.
It seems pretty straight forward. If you don't want to see them, don't click on the link. I don 't think that anybody has ever actually posted nudity, only provocative pictures which are no worse than a Herbal Essences shampoo commercial.

It's not like there's a thread called "The Fuzzy Kitten Station" and people are throwin' boobs and butts all over the place. That would be out of line.
Pung is on a good track over in the Boobie Station. I'm sure it's not his plan, but I have now deemed it his master plan. That ingenious basta......product of un-wed parents.

Actually, that was not Pung's idea, but someone else pleaded he do it (just scroll up in the boobie thread).

Nope, nothing is simple U.P. and that is why I think only admin could set things straight, seeing as how he created the site, and I don't think anyone would have a problem following his interpretation of the rules (well baxie probably would, but I'm talking people, not goats here :p). The problem is that there's a fair amount of people here, me included, who feel that there is one person abusing her power, and deleting the posts that she personally finds offensive, but that are actually NOT breaching the so-called forum rules. She's also taking things out of context and acting, as losttime put it, like the king of the castle - making the forum into what she thinks it should be. Believe it or not, lostcom is human too, and I've seen him lurk into the "grabber's corner", and hey, he even liked being grabbed himself. And IMO, if he had a problem with those threads, he'd have them deleted them already, seeing as how he's sent threads he doesn't approve of to oblivion before.

Your joke was hilarious, btw, but I understand why it was deleted, as I'm sure you do too.

Hmmmmm. I haven't read this thread since the first posting but I have to admit that I'm a little disturbed by more than a few things posted here.

First of all, I do not think we need to try to re-invent the wheel! This forum has operated fine since its inception so if it isn't broke, don't fix it! I honestly think clarification of the rules (since the subject came up) was all that was necessary and we have that now. Nothing needs to change. Posts don't need to be watered down and I pray that doesn't happen. In my opinion, that would be a crying shame!

The standard I have decided to use (again, in lieu of any advice from the Admin) is what is seen and heard on televison. This is, after all, a forum devoted to a television show, right? That goes for language and photos. Using that as a model to measure propriety, I don't think any of the photos needed to be deleted. Just my opinion. I think it's a pretty good basis for "judging" what is acceptable and what is not, as I felt like there needed to be parameters rather than what I personally would find acceptable. Ironically enough, I owe that idea originally to one of the forum members who has offended me personally more than any other! Thank you for the idea, TP!:)

That being said, I am honestly horrified at the notion of a mod or anyone else editing my words on a post!! I see that as being so passive / aggressive and more offensive to my sensibilities than just deleting my post. I have been aware of my ability to do that as a mod and only exercised it as a joke in a thread about WHH & changing the past. I think that is the most offensive moderating tool we have at our disposal and I will always stand up and explain to a member of the forum why I felt like it was necessary to delete their post rather than just editing their words for any reason. That is the way I would want to be treated.

Finally, I have a question. Where in the rules does it state that all of the posts on the forum have to pertain to Lost? I have always wonered if that was just a myth or an actual rule?

bunnydixon
08-17-2009, 09:04 AM
perhaps if a mod ever felt the need to edit a post (yeah i remember my quivering bottom lisa lol!) they should ask the member to change it before they amend it themselves (although i agree, it's not up to a mod to change the wording of a post - if there is something in there breaking the rules, take out the whole post and explain why so nobody makes the same mistake).

notsolost42
08-17-2009, 09:10 AM
The only posts that have ever been edited only had curse words removed so the post did not have to be deleted. No one's thoughts or expressions or intent have ever been edited nor would they ever be.

I just wanted to repost the admin's thoughts on this thread:

Yeah, on the older version the admin told me that the program was supposed to do the same thing but he also said that it doesn't pick up everything. He had mentioned that even using the first letter of the curse word followed by a bunch of *#+$ or anything like that was also not permitted. So, the only things I have edited, and believe me I can't keep up with it all, have been that kind of stuff when the program seems to miss it. I hope we carry on as usual and not let these simple rules for a group setting get in the way. There is no reason that one adult can't express what they mean to another adult without curse words. We all get the meaning even if someone were to say "That frigging/flipping....or whatever substitute they choose. I think we are smart enough to figure it out! lol!

Just to clarify, I really do appreciate your intenion in leaving a post and only editing the curse word, Notso. I am just not comfortable doing that. I think it would feel invasive & sneaky and I just wouldn't like it if someone edited my words. I would rather be told it was deleted or asked to edit it. Besides, as Bunny said, if a member curses in their posts I think they need to be told that it's not acceptable so they know not to do it again. My "yard stick" at this point is if it passes the censors on tv, it's ok here on the forum...both visually & audibly. I really like your idea, Bunny, of asking the poster to edit the post or have it deleted. That I am comfortable with! What say you, Notso?

This is just my opinion but I just want to state for the record that I believe both Notso and I have the best of intentions and we're doing our best to figure this moderation gig out! It's a lot more difficult than it should be because the job description and duties have always been very vague...MADDENIGLY so for me! I'll speak for myself. I'm learning as I go by trial and error. The point is that we're both doing the best we can and we are going to make mistakes as we learn. We are going to miff a few people in the process as well. Just know that our hearts are in the right place.

How about meeting in the middle? Delete the curse word, because as mods that is what we should be doing, and send a friendly pm to the poster reminding them that cursing is not allowed on the forum? That way, the word is removed and the poster understands the guidelines. I usually just replace the letters of the word removed with asterists and leave no letters. If we have to send a pm to the poster and then follow up to see if they removed the word in question, then I am afraid we will just be spending so much time on the particular post. And what happens if they don't remove it? That will just make take more time and effort to resolve it. So, I don't want to spend the precious little time I have chasing people around to take out a word that shouldn't have been there to begin with. There are just too many posts. I want to keep writing my theories!!!!! How does that sound to you?

I've never seen anything official and have not been told anything officially. But I do keep in mind that this is a LOST forum. I know we are a little family here and like to go to the General Discussions board and talk about all kinds of things. No problem with that as far as I know. At least as long as the discussions don't fall into the other areas that are not permitted according to the rules.

Bless you for answering that! It has driven me crazy since I got here.

I'm not trying to be difficult but I'm just not comfortable editing people's posts. As much as I am thrilled about the notion of reaching a compromise & creating a united front, I just can't compromise my convictions. I would be more comfortable deleting a post, sending a PM to the poster with a "cut and paste" of the post in it so they can re-post it without the curse word in it. That fits within my comfort zone and accomplishes the same goal and is just as much "work", I think? I'm assuming you would PM a member if you had to edit their post, right? Whaddya say?

I've never really pm'd a poster before for just removing a curse word but now that we have these guidelines it would be a good thing to send a friendly reminder to them. I think if you do it your way and I do it mine we are still accomplishing the same end and that's the point. If what you do works for you then keep doing it and I will continue to do what I do then. There's a forum I go to that has filter that turns certain words into a series of asterics. I've seen this on several forums actually. Of course it's better if people just refrain from using profanities out of common courtesy but some people either don't have that or their vocabulary is too limited.

As far as 'the new diggs...' I'd like some other screen options. I'm using 'yurimen' which is gray with red accents. But some of the graphics look kind of cheap. It'd be nice to have this color with the Predator graphics.

Boutte, that was done to me here on this forum by a mod because the word was a euphemism when i was making an example of the thread "6 packs and packages" and the asterics were put in its place. I asked why and was told because the word was offensive. But "packages" was ok? I dont get it. We all know what "packages" means but wasnt an issue with this person. This is the problem with one of the Mods, just pick and choose what to delete. Just a way to abuse power.

Actually, that was the Rolling Stones that did Satisfaction.

really i'm so over this conversation. i don't care anymore. personally, i'm just going to do what i do and damn anyone who doesn't like it. damn them! damn damn damn.

and for what it's worth I'd rather have the words removed rather than the entire post. at least the rest of the conversation still makes sense and my ideas can still come across. just don't change the context. like don't go back and make me say i love kittens cause i don't. i hate them actually. F kittens, dammit.

yeah exactly, why should we punish some people who have the disability of limited vocabulary? just because i have trouble expressing myself doesn't give anyone the right to censor me, dammit.

and what about people with Tourrette's? some people need to hurl a barrage of obscenities. perfectly natural.

Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name,

I stopped by the chat, only to find spacebar suffers from multiple personality disorder, and U.P. suffering from being an ass to the Australians, which pissed Lisa and Krak, and me, cause he made them go at Canadians - so there, we almost had an international incident. Aside from that, you really didn't miss much bunny.

I have two questions:

A. Space Bar made it to the chat room?

B. KrakUp is Back?:)

and two comments:

A. Some people take pleasure in stirring up trouble.

B. I'm so glad to be back! Hi Jelana, hi Bunny, hi everybody!!!!!:D

My war with Australia was purely done for my own entertainment.
Krakup was on board right from the beginning, and knew that I was only joking.
If anything I think I helped to strengthen Cana-Aussie relations.

It's funny, I'm still in the habit of checking the chat.

But what's really strange, is the fact that there are people who go there, unaware that there is this big-ass forum, just one link below.

They slowly left when we all showed up... :o

Hey J, glad I could help. :)
I know what you mean I`ve still been checking in on the chat too.
I think I`m going to keep it up, I don`t want to treat the chat room like a prostitute that I only go to when there`s no one else. (not that I have any experience in that kind of thing.)

Your innocence is so questionable, UP, with the pics you've shared, the skin-tight women's clothes and the gang signs! You're an enigma. No wonder you love this show! :)

It`s my new gang sign for my non-violent posse that I roll with.
We`re called `The Friendly Canucks`, and we`re very intimidating; as you can see.

It's Ok now LostDownUnder, I've worked out my issues with the Aussies.
In fact back in the old chat room, krakup and I are currently in a rousing rendition of the Sound of Silence.
We're really tearing down borders through our joint harmonies.

Dang it, I watched a movie with a cover of that song in it....I can't remember what it was...maybe Watchmen?
I remember in that scene, it was playing at a funeral for someone.
