I want to start some speculation about the smoke monster, it seems like its been overlooked, almost like its what the producers wanted. (i really tried not to use the "smokescreen" analogy). Did anyone happen to notice that the earliest time period we saw the monster was when the French scientists showed up on the island? I dont remember seeing/hearing it in the 70s. I am interested to know how/when the monster came to be. any thoughts?

If it really is a security system for the Island I would imagine its been there all along. And under the Temple is where it resides or we been shown. . But that is just speculation. The infected members could have been lying about exactly what it was

I kinda wonder if the producers deliberately didn't show the monster in the 70's. or even in the 50's when everybody was time jumping. Nobody even made reference to it, and you never even heard it creeping around in the jungle...like i said, the earliest its seen or heard is the 80's...makes one wonder if someone summoned it after the events of "the incident" and the french team washing up on the island.

I noticed this thread because I wanted to ask the question on why smokie doesn't like the sonic fence - any thoughts....(I'm guessing DI built that, which is why they might not have as much experience of him)

I don't think I don't think MIB is Smokey, I think MIB is the vessel Smokey was using at the time of the beach conversation.

Neo-John, who is now Smokey succeeded in the one part of his goal that we currently know, the one that he set in the 1800's. To kill Jacob, seemingly bcuz Jacob is keeping him on the island and he wants to leave.

I'm thinking it's something like...you can't have a front with out a back. You can't have Good without Bad.....and you can't have a MIB on the Island without a Jacob.

The way I see it is, now that MIB found a Loophole (Having someone of their own "Free Will" Kill Jacob) NOW....MIB can go to the Temple, and Go Home. Be it- Die; or to actually go to another place.

Jacob and "Smokey" are GODS from ancient times......Humans actually built the temples on the Island to worship THEM. They have been at eachother's throats for a LONG time, trying to out duel eachother in a GOOD vs BAD power struggle.

WOW !!!! I can't believe how close you guys are to exactly what I have been thinking all along. For clearity I think you must do a Google search on the story of "Enlil and Enki". These were the offspring of A God known as Anu. Guess what???? They originated from another planet known to the Sumerians as Nibiru. They were both left here on Earth until the planets return which is every 3,600 years. Jacob (Enlil) tells Smokie (Enki): "They are coming". BINGO !!!!! I am serious about this. Please read the account....Google Search "NIBIRU". Please post your thought after you check it out. I believe the writers are taking a WHOLE lot from this story that has been recorded by the Sumerians on tablets that were recently found and translated.
