In episode #3 of season one ("Tabula Rasa"), are we to understand that Doctor Jack killed the Federal marshal that was taking Kate back to the United States to put him out of his misery? I only asks because it is kind of implied that he does, but I would like to be sure. Just trying to find out what people are directly responsible for someones death on the show so far.

my OH and i were having a disagreement over this the other day - i think it was a mercy killing involved as he was suffering. think sawyer tried to shoot him but then jack had to take over and do it.

i don't think he did you know they never said how long he had been in the tent after getting shot.

I don't think he did because Jack is the type of person/doctor that would do whatever he had to in order to save someone- case in point the guy who he operated on in one of the flashbacks and lost, then kissed the guy's daughter afterwards, then when he was going to amputate Boone's leg but eventually was convinced to let Boone die. And he was shocked/upset after he heard the gunshot and saw Sawyer coming out of the tent with the gun in his hand and Sawyer tells Jack someone had to put the guy out of his mirror. Also, I dont remember what episode it was, maybe it was the pilot or another episode in season 1 (the one where Shannon's father is brought in and dies in the Er), Jack's father says he doesnt know how to let go.

Conversations that might help explain
KATE: Can't you put him out of his misery?
JACK: I saw your mug shot, Kate. I am not a murderer.
Sawyer also wanted Marshal dead. Kate went in with the gun, but Sawyer came out with the gun saying he shot him. This didn't kill him.
He was going to die and it would have taken 2-4 days.
After he was shot
Jack euthanazied Marshal.
I don't want to debate if euthanasia is murder, but in this case if he was left to die after being shot that would have been murder.

i think def that jack "assisted" in the marshall's death ....he may have a hard time giving up but i think as a surgeon....he also knows when all hope is gone and can end suffering when needed....i felt no doubt in that scene as to what happened

yes i think sawyer doing something to make his suffering worse is what caused jack to go and sort the situation out.

Yes Jack did kill the Marshall. I just started re-watching Season 1 last week. Sawyer went in and shot him, but didn't do it right and it did not kill him. Jack is a doctor and will do anything to save a person, but doctors also dissagree with letting a person suffer. So, from the sounds that came out of the tent, it sounded like Jack smothered him to death. Then Jack burried him by himself.

I am re-watching the first season, and it does appear that Jack had to put the Marshall down, so to speak. Sawyer botched it so bad, that even Jack knew it would be unmerciful to let the poor man suffer and bleed out for hours when there was no hope for survival. I tend to agree with the previous post. It sounded like Jack smothered him.

Yeah I agree, i just watched that epsiode again and it was either smothering or choking him from the sounds coming from the tent.
