Why did the world black out for two minutes and seventeen seconds? How come almost everyone on the planet experienced that time as a snippet from their lives six months into the future?

FBI agents Mark Benford (Joseph Fiennes) and Demetri Noh (John Cho) have been assigned to the case because Benford saw himself working the case in the future, and they've already started developing theories about the cause of the flashforward. But fans of the TV show are already way ahead of them. (In fact, even before a second episode aired, there was already a blog devoted to these theories (http://flashforwardtheories.blogspot.com/).)

Here are some of the more interesting theories we've seen. (Warning! Spoilers ahead)

I think it's gotta be alternate realities. That people are able to use the information from their flash forwards to either realise it or avoid it. Obviously, people with desirable futures will want them realised, and people with undesirable futures would presumably want to avoid them.

Well, it would appear that in their effort to thwart it, they are creating it.
And I have a sneaky feeling, simiilar to Des/Charlie, that no matter how many times Mark destroys a friendship bracelet, he'll end up wearing the one he was wearing in his FF.

(and little heads up, Mark.... if you don't want to push your wife into the arms of that other guy, then start working with her to avoid it - don't get your nose out of joint over something she hasn't even done yet but DID have the courage to tell you about, man...)

I think the fact that he did see his future it is also adding to the end result. He is already jealous and basically pushing her away and inevitably into the very arms of that man. Also I am curious to know if you saw the bracelet on his wrist after he burned it? I think it might have been in the previews for next week or another scene from yetserdays episode but it seemed to be on his wrist and noticeable. So either his daughter made a new one or something but I like to know if anyone else saw it on his wrist after we saw him burning one. might have to rewatch that scene again

No, I didn't notice it was back. If it was, then she made him another one.

I guess it was him thinking about his flashfroward and he saw himself drinking and he had the bracelet on. I wouldnt be surprised if we see it on him again.

So what does the AA guy do to self-actualise his daughter back together?

My take on the subject as to why the flashes accured. Is. I belive someone or something 6 months from now saw something so important so life changing that it found a way to project it to the future. The only problem is. It couldn`t chanel who or what receaved it. I belive the one`s awake durring the flashes. Wabted this information and wanted to prevent the one or many who receved the key clues. I belive only a few receaved the major clues. But all parties must be tracked down and their flashes placed in order in order to receave the true message.
