Aside from Aaron, Ji Yeon and Ethen they only show the physical births of Locke and Linus. Both have no mother figures, both have abusive fathers, emotionally and physically. They're both trying to find purpose. They both leave the island. It took both of them to bring John's people back. Both killed there fathers to become a leader (though John needed help).
Only difference is John gives people choices / and Ben manipulates peoples choices. A subject they exploit the first time Ben tries to kill Locke.
I wonder if Ben killing Locke outside the island causes the loophole somehow? John making the choice of sacrefice and Ben taking his choice away.
Just a dumb thought.

You make a good point about Ben manipulating people's choices...
He wanted both Jack and Juliet to "want to help him" when he had his little back problem. But that "want" was actuall a 'carrot' held in their face, that would get them home.

I wonder why Ben just didnt tell Jack that if he took care of his back that he would send him home.
Didnt he know that the Island would want him back and Jack would get back if that was his destiny?
Seemd he was more intersted in"breaking him". After Jack saw the films Bens plan was ruined. Or so he told Jack. WHo knows, mayube it was Bens plan all along, but doubtful.

I have wondered the same thing, and yes the only thing you can deduce from the way Ben manipulated him is that Ben wanted to screw with Jack's mind.
