It is the point at which Earth connects to Heaven.

Book of Genesis (28:11-19)

4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

six seat planes numbers....six people scheduled to die. They didn't want to die and struggled with the angels as did Jacob.

They refuse to follow the angels up into heaven and now lead a more hellish life on earth...wishing that they were "dead" and up in heaven where they belong.

I thought that for a while too. I know Jack was in row 23 and Ana Lucia was in 42 or the tail but that is all I can rememeber. I would think that row 4 was in the cockpit section where we do not know anyone survived. Row 8 might be up there too.

I remember seeing something someehere with the flight list of where everyone was seated... I will try to locate that again. I think that this 'Jacob's Ladder" idea os a little too much like the purgatory theory which has alreay been dismissed by the writers.

Real interesting theory though, I don't think we're dealing with "heaven and hell" so to speak but I know Lost likes to throw in religious themes so it makes sense.

the numbers are the Core values for the Valenzetti Equation that predicts the end of the world, its believed DHARMA was trying to change these core values because apparently the planet is doomed.

I know the purgatory thing was dismissed, but I think the ladder in Jacob's cabin is symbolic of something.. Maybe not purgatory, but more like a metaphorical heaven and hell.. They have to follow their own path and if they don't then they fall into their own personal hell... it ties into fate, faith, and the definition of dharma.

I've only recently come to this site, and just opened this thread and wow!!!. many have dismissed the purgatory/nexus to the afterlife theory and got on my case for stubbornly sticking with it, but I am totally onboard now. The numbers have always been a connection to everything! I have visited some of the Lost peripheral sites, like the hanso one, but thought that they were created as part of a game and not necessarily a primary relation to the show, but now I am sure they are. I had a minor in religion, but thanks Elohiym for the refresher. Of all theories I think this is it.

its not strictly purgatory but i like the whole redeeming themselves idea not just in the good/bad sense. but there is just so much more to it than that.

i keep changing my mind lol and am sure i will continue to do so but thats what i love about this show so much - it keeps you on your toes!

The problem with the purgatory theory is that the head writer has officially said it WAS NOT TRUE. So, it's not purgatory, no matter how much you like the idea of it. The reason people "got on your case" is probably because they know that the purgatory theory is OFFICIALLY off the table. It's no longer a possibility. So, if you keep saying it's true, even after it's been said by the show that it wasn't true, it's just a little silly.. I'm sure I'm not the first person to point out that purgatory is NOT part of the show, according to the show itself.
