Crap!! I was attempting to copy a post from another thread and ended up trumping Hunter's OP. Sorry everyone! I have no idea how to undo it. Please see Hunter's post below for the original post. :(

When something is burned, lets say wood for example, a few things are produced. Heat, ash and smoke. Forget the heat, lets focus on the other two things, ash and smoke.
What is one of the biggest trouble makers on the island: Smokey! It seems to be everywhere.
Lets look at the cabin. What is around the cabin? Ash!
For what ever reason, the ash is around the cabin. It is either protecting what is inside or it is keeping what ever is inside in there. I'm leaning toward protection. For some reason Smokey can't cross the ash.
I'm I just being stupid or is there a connection between the two? THey are both by-products of fire. Does this make sense?
What does it mean, I don't know.

I agree that the ring around the cabin is protecting what/who is in there...i.e., Jacob. The ring has not been proven to be ash though, has it? It is called ash but it could be volcanic ash for all we know. There is that pesky volcano on the island. Say, perhaps that is where smokie came from...the depths of hades and it is a cerberus! Could be, ya never know. The volcano will play an important part in the islands demise, IMO. This could explain alot...
Could explain:
Why smokie is behind water, seemingly held in, and doesn't cross into it.
Why smokie appears from the vents, or Cerberus Vents, according to the blast door map.
Why smokie judges the living, devours them and sends them to hell.
Accounts for smokie's ability to read someones memories.
Just some thoughts here...
Perhaps there has been an ongoing battle for the souls of the dead between Cerberus and Annubis...Cerberus feeds on the living and lets all dead souls pass on to hell, while Annubis judges the goodness of the soul and if it deserves to pass on to another life. This could also account for the importance of burying the dead to keep them away from smokie...sounds interesting, doesn't it?

Whatever that substance is was to keep jacob safe inside it. Ever since Ilana and Bram reacted the way they did when they saw the ring broken told me that it was to keep Jacob safe.
Everything started to make sense for me about the Cabin after that scene.
Also about Locke as well. Its been said that locke was Nemesis all along but if that was true, why it have been jacob asking for help?
If it was Nemesis why would he be asking himself for help?
The concept is very simple now and what we had seen was MIB/Smokey pretending to be Jacob saying "Help Me" as Christian is pretending to speak on Jacobs behalf.
This makes Locke think he is special and ben think that as well as well as Ben to think jacob still has no desire to meet with or talk directly to him.

Why doesn't the ash wash away, considering how often it rains?
That's some resilient ass, ash!

Funny you should mention it...
I just read an update to the Chicago Ass Carp.
Here's a phrase I bet you never thought you'd hear:
"Illinois environmental officials plan to dump a toxic chemical into a nearly 6-mile section of the canal today"

Actually, I learned that almost every guy is fixated on that... I've yet to meet one that isn't. Which explains quite well why they're more homophobic than us. :p
Uh-oh- I sense moderating coming my way. :o

Obviously it does differ. But I'm a very good at observing. Besides, I've learned this not just through my own experience, but by talking to my girlfriends. It's true, scouts honour. :D

I don't know either. I do think there is some connection between fire (or a particular fire?) and the smoke monster though. The picture young Locke drew made smokey look like he came out of a fire. *shrugs*

It depends on your point of view. And I don't mean philosophically. And remember why the man climbed the mountain.
One last thought , Smokie isn't necessarily made of actual smoke.

Oh Boutte, please do. It is spiraling out of control~and I was not much help!!! lol. Yes, smokie is not necessarily "smoke" as we think.

I think it is now but I also think that TPTB will reveal what it really is in the end. I still like my idea that all this is a battle between Cerberus and Annubis for the souls of the dead on one level. It does kind of fit.

Is everyone assuming that it was Jacob in the cabin then? Ben thought he was but admitted to not seeing him even when Locke heard him say 'help me'
My take is that it was 'MIB' in the cabin not Jacob. Jacob up till now appears to have had control, I've read something about Ash rings used to contain witches etc and whats the point of the show? It seems to be about change on the island, Jacob being the naughty boy, MIB really the good one? I've more thoughts behind this but i want to see what you lot come up with first.

That is exactly what I was thinking, Mattyboy! Why would Jacob ask Locke for help?
Here's my post on the subject:
"Here's a crazy thought. Is it possible that that was MIB who said "help me"? Ben had never met Jacob and was just faking talking to him so he wouldn't have been any wiser, right?"
(I confess that I totally screwed up this thread while I was trying to copy this post from another thread. SO SORRY, Hunter!!)

the ring of ash immediately reminded me of buffy and it being used to keep something trapped or to keep something out. and i wondered if by using it to keep something out, whoever laid it there has inadvertently trapped whoever was in the cabin.
however, now with all the developments - i havent a clue lol!

well - i dont understand why jacob would be trapped as a prisoner in the cabin. ileana and co knew expected him to be there. were they going to free him? it didnt seem this way, more as if they were going to collect him.

OK, but Ileana appears to be working for Jacob, who to say she wasn't going to collect MIB? The parchment with the knife told her something had changed, like he had escaped.
Yet another point of view why burn down the 'prison' used to hold one or the other?
