I'm rewatching Season 5 and I'm on the episode "Dead is Dead".
Ben has just entered his room and pressed all those special buttons to go inside his hiergolyphic place (if you will)... He is walking down the stairs with a lantern, he than walks onto water and reaches down and pulls something so that the water releases.
This part is what gets me though. AFTER the waters all gone, he says, "I'll be outside". There is NO way that Sun or Locke could have heard him if he was all the way done there, so what does this mean? That the 'monster' is somewhat human? I think that's VERY weird.
Check it out... It's around 22 or 23 minutes into it(roughly, I can't remember).

Yes, I believe he was telling smokie he would be outside. He had summoned smokie to take care of the freighter crew, right? That's why he summoned smokie.

That's the thing I wonder the most about, ya know?

Yeah, I can understand why you would wonder about that. Just imagine that it's an intelligent bundle of smoke or something.

I always thought smokie had to have some brains in it due to the fact that it didn't always mindlessly kill. Jack was somehow able to escape it in the pilot with no problem. We don't know what happened between it and Locke in Walkabout, but he came out alive. Eko also survived his first meeting with it. Etc...
As for whether Ben knew it was smart, well, I don't think he knew for sure. He communicated with it the only way humans know how; by talking.

Intelligent ??? I'll say it is !! Im rewatching season 3 and when Kate and Juliette are handcuffed together after they "left her behind"....while they are running thru the woods, smokie approaches and I swear it sounded like it took pictures of them...it stopped right in front of them then I could hear, click, click like it was snapping photos...I had to rewind and watch again..totally bizarre !!!!!

It was...in a way. It was taking pictures from of their memories! Well, which one was smokie more interested in, I forget? Was it Juliet? Anyway, I know exactly what you are saying. It was like what it did to Eko the first meeting.

TPTB have said, apparently, that it's not nanorobots. But I think you can be excused for pfffting what TPTB say sometimes.
I definely think it is manufactured. Either alien or future technology.

TPTB said definitely not a long time ago. I had thought that too, way back.

I have a feeling that the origin of Smokey will be much simpler than nanobots.
Here's my theory on Smokey....
What are two Lost mysteries??
What is Smokey?, and What's happened with this whole volcano thing?
I have a feeling Smokey will have been forged from the hell fires of this volcano we've always heard about. Maybe something along the lines of the Man in Black is killed by the volcano, which releases his spirit (since he isn't supposed to fully die) which takes the form of Smokey.

So it evolved on the island (super-) naturally?

i'm musing that the two, island and smokie are symbiotic or perhaps smokie is a manifestation of the island.
i use to consider the island as something prescient, performing a necessary task critical for the function of time, why it needed saving lol
safe to call smokie alien, in my book

Volcano? Who in the heck mentioned a volcano on Lost? When Ben first came to the island, his teacher was telling the class about Geography and Annie mentions the Volcano, which they seemed to make a big deal about, sort of like a story they told the kids cause the teacher tries to down play it like it won't happen again cause it was a long time ago.

I think its kind of funny that we don't see the smoke monsrter till Danielle comes to the island. As if that is the first sighting. The Losties flash through all sorts of time periods but the only one with the smoke monsrter is when Danielle and science team come. Just a thougt

Oh, okay, thanks. Didn't remember that like at all!

Actually, his teacher Olivia (Horace's first wife) was demonstrating how a volcano works with a model od one and they were interupted by the warning alarm that they were under attack and the classroom went into lockdown.

Wouldn't a volcano, techniqually fall under Geography?
