I have watched science fiction since I was a child. I have noticed so many parallels of Lost to other works. Based on these works and observations made in the show, I believe there is some ancient thing under the island. Whether it is technological, spiritual, an entity, a force, it is very powerful. It is also very ancient, very intelligent, and hooked into the electro magnetic powers, and other forces. It has been manipulating events to some end.

Might I suggest you search the forum for "Space Time Turle Wormholes". I really think that you're onto something, and I too have been saying that there is actually something special under the island.
"Space Time Turtle Wormholes" is the key to the show; I believe.

But do you think that is what they are referring to when the others speak of "the island"; this special thing underneath it? Or do you think it might be something else, like the smoke monster or something else entirely that we haven't even seen or heard mention of yet?

I just started reading one of the ABC official LOST bookclub book, called The Moon Pool (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moon_Pool), which has a similar kind of thing in it, called 'The Dweller'. Do you think it might be something like that?

What about an alien being held captive? The comic book in the first season showed us an alien, along with polar bears, etc. Not saying that is what it is, just bringing it back to light for conversations sake.
