check it

remember on the last episode of season 3?

the opening scene where jack is cruising through the black neighborhood?

remember what song he was listening to?

Scentless Apprentice By Nirvana

from the time that he is driving to the point where he stops and parks the following lyrics are said (there hard to hear cuz nirvana likes to scream a lot
: P )

Like most babies smell like butter

His smell smelled like no other

He was born scentless and senseless

He was born a scentless apprentice

ok im still working on what it means, but isnt it ironic that its talking about a baby? like maybe aaron? i know nirvana didnt write this song for LOST but maybe the producers thought of this song ? does "Scentless Apprentice" mean anything? does his "smell" represent something? "He smelled like no other" this a reference to the others?

any thoughts on this give me your input, it just kind of caught my attention

i've looked into the songs and books in Lost a lot....could it be related to the book "perfume" that the long was based on OR.....better yet just that Jack's life is an eerie parallel to Kurt Cobain's life (he wrote the song).....addicted to drugs and obv very suicidal...i mean....he is standing on the railing of that bridge ready to do it ...the only thing that stops him is his parked car causing the accident and him having to go save everyone again?????

ya thats a good point jacksnurse, didnt see that, but im talking more about the lyrics because they mention baby (in past tense) he WAS born scentless and senseless, and from seeing how the writers like philosophy a lot "John Locke, Rousseu, etc." im thinking they meant to interperet this another way, because on lostpedia, small little things are always referring to other things like how the newspaper article had words relating to one of stephen kings novels, i cant remember, im actually going to wikipedia that nirvana song and see what it was about, if i find out anything interesting ill post it

Have any of you guys read Perfume? It's about this guy who is born scentless but takes in scents like no other. But what I got out of it in comparison to the show-The guy is like ostracized b/c he lives in France in the 16 or 1700's...everything and everyone has a real pungent smell....cept him. Well he goes thru life without any real feeling and just kinda takes whatever abuse people throw at him till he finds this girl that has such an impressionable smell he kills her and starts to make parfumes with her smell as the sort of basis I guess. I have no idea why but I kept thinking of Ben thru all of it....Seems quiet enough, somewhat strange, then capable all at once of a pretty gruesome death. Only b/c I was trying to find a connection to Lost; I doubt I would've come to conclusion on my own. I do believe in the end he ends up on an island where the natives kill him though (I skipped to the end...I'm still reading the rest)

Gee I am totally buying this. I feel like I was missing the forest for the trees. Also I like the song and band, but you wouldn't consider it melodic or pretty - it is dissonant and also like his life in that way.

the writers said something about the name of the funeral home being an easter egg or something but I don't remember it. it may be nothing.

I made a post about this subject a long time ago. Here are my thoughts on why the song was put into that episode.

just thought i would throw you guys a bone. If you want a clue into what this is all about check out the song jack is listening to in the future flash. Its Scentless Apprentice by Nirvana. Kurt Cobain wrote that song about the main character from Perfume'(a book by Patrick Suskind 1985) Read what the book is about and that should help some. This song wasnt picked by accident. Good luck ya all

Lyrics
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok. So i dug up the Lyrics for everyone. here they are

Like most babies smell like butter
his smell smelled like no other
he was born scentless and senseless
he was born a scentless apprentice

Go away - get away, get away, get a-way
every wet nurse refused to feed him
electrolytes smell like semen

I promise not to sell your perfumed secrets
there are countless formulas for pressing flowers

I lie in the soll and fertilize mushrooms
Leaking out gas fumes are made into perfume

You can't fire me because I quit
Throw me in the fire and I won't throw a fit

A little about it
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Scentless Apprentice" is based on the German novel Perfume, by Patrick Süskind. Published in 1985, the novel tells the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a boy born without body odour but with a heightened sense of smell. Grenouille grows up to be a perfume apprentice, and uses perfume to mask his lack of odour. He also becomes a murderer, stealing the smells of his female victims in his quest to create a human odour for himself. More recently, the source material was filmed as Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.

In a 1993 MuchMusic interview, Cobain claimed that his copy of Perfume almost never left his pocket. Cobain said he related to Grenouille's alienation.

Cobain also related to Grenouille's fascination with odor. "I’m really interested in smells," he revealed in a 1993 Spin interview. "I think I’d like to own a perfumerie someday."

How it relates to LOST
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your the first that iv heard even give a lick why this song was put into Jack's Flash Fwd. But im glade you did think about it. In my opion. This song Scentless Apprentice is in refrance to how Jack is some what folowing in his father's foot steps. By having shatterd faith and a life of depression and drugs and alchol to give you the slightest bit of satisfaction that your worth living in this world. Even though his father didnt us edrugs or atleast wasn't shown yet using drugs. He did however use something almost like drugs in fact many may argue is more dangerous and addicting than any drug outlaw and that is he used Alchol.

The man w/o a scent probably had other defects when he was born.Medically speaking, when a baby is born with one defect, there's usually 1 or 2 others waiting to be found. Jack's dad being an alcoholic may have genetically altered Jack. He's been set up to be addictive, depressive and kind of manic=fetal alcohol-the sins of the fathers, etc. Not having a human odor wouldn't seem to make you a homicidal maniac unless you had some predisposition to antisocial behavior.Poor Jack is trapped in his genes. The song really fits Jack's mood in that episode.Interesting Easter egg!

Pretty interesting find LS1234review. Although not nearly as interesting as your Lost Time Theory.
