But what does the red shirt matter?

Redshirt is a term given to short-lived characters whose sole purpose is to be killed off. I think it was a term made famous in Star Trek - in which Kirk and Spock or whoever would visit a strange planet, along with some random, unknown crew members (wearing red shirts) who would be killed by the inhabitants of that planet. So the joke became that wearing a red shirt meant you were destined to die.

Juliet died because she was not part of Jacob's "plan," whatever that may be. Or maybe her death WAS part of his plan... If you see her crouching by the barrel and chains, you think, yeah, she's a goner, and though I enjoyed her as a TV character, great dramas always kill off characters that are well liked or beloved. Look at Charlie, Libby, Eko, Daniel, Alex, etc. This is fundamental dramatic television writing. People die tragic deaths before their "time" in real life, so TPTB incorporate this into their series. My favorite death so far is still Artz...:D
