I dont think it matters, really, what the guy on the ship was exposed too. Faraday was exposing himself to radiation on a daily basis in Desmonds time travel/consciousness jump. Why didn't it affect him?

Side note. Yes Desmond was exposed to electro magnetism when the hatch blew. And he has already been apart of some sort of time leap/future seeing. Pretty cool episode really.

Because Desmond was right there when it blew up. He turned the fail safe key and got a lot of the magnetism.

I think Faraday actually jumped in time and that's why he wrote in his journal, that if anything went wrong Desmond would be his constant.
