What I don't understand about Desmond's two timelines is while he is knocked out on the freighter, how much time passes in the 1996 time? It seems that the freighter time is moving in minutes while the 96 time is moving in days, maybe weeks, due to the time required to travel. Any thoughts?

After Desmond woke up in 1996 on Daniel's couch, Daniel mentioned him being gone for 75 minutes. I don't remember what happened during that "flash" though.

Yeah, yeah. But it seemed as though only five minutes passed on the freighter. Very confusing for me.

Also, sort of unrelated, do we have a year that Desmond got released from prison?
We know he's been on the Island since 2001 (3 years).
I was thinking that all his flashes would cause him to be kicked out of the army. But 1996 seems too early.

On Lostpedia, it said that Desmond joined the army in 1997, so i dont know.

apparently the time also increases exponentially thus the 75 minutes can only increase giving him the appropriate time for traveling

Someone (maybe Faraday?) commented about consciousness travel.. which isn't the same thing as time travel. Desmond is sort of time travelling, but there are never two of him in one place.. His mind is time travelling, but not his body. So, I don't think that the time differences between the two matter that much.

They matter for his mind - remember the dead rat? Brain could not handle the flashing - an they said it was happening more often and faster.

Yes, they matter for the individual, but I don't think they do in the grand scheme of things.
They only matter for the individual because the quicker they go back and forth, the harder it is to stay anchored in one time.

Huh. Well, that's clearly false. Weird.

Exactly. And that is why everyone who travles as Desmond did VIA mind out of body. They must find something that both minds of the past and future can balance them selves out on that also exist in both times.
