I think that's the point of the show.

We will see what happens to the folks if they didn't land on the island (some of them die, some of them on the run from the cops, others have illnesses etc) and as the dark entity, smoke monster says, John Locke was the only person who understood what a good thing they had on the island.

Maybe this will be the point of Jacob and everything else that we've been seeing.

Jack appears to have cancer or something too...

i think the point is to show that even without the island, all the characters would interact in the same way they did on the island. basically whatever happened on the island was fate, and you cant change that whether on the island or not

This is probably true too.

Hurly seems to be having a better life. he's still a lottery winner, CEO of his favorite restraunt, and considers himself a lucky person. He had a happy-go-lucky zeal about himself. Sayid also doesn't seem to have a bad life at the moment as he is uniting with his love. Of course its a bit too early to make this conclusion now so time will tell if thats indeed the case.

i don't think the interactions will be exactley the same. for example, locke and jack. man of science, man of faith to be sure. but this time maybe they help each other. of course, maybe not. i can still see locke screaming, "YOU"RE supposed to help!" to jack about spinal surgery.

by interactions i meant all the characters will help each other out in a way that mirrors all that happened on the island. jack might help locke in LA, who was no longer paralyzed on the island. it also seems rose no longer has cancer, like on the island. boone and locke seem to bond, like they did on the island. u guys get the point...

They had hard time before as well. All of their lives were messed up in some way. As stated already, I think this is showing that even though certain things may be different in each of their respective journies, the outcomes will more or less be the same.

For instance, aLocke (alternate) is probably NOT cripppled because of what his father did to him. I just think this from the way he avoided the question when aJack asked, and if it did happen the same way there would have been no Jacob to save him.

How does Jack appear to have cancer?

He's bleeding on his colar, gets nervous on planes, and drinks too many of those little bottles. Aren't those all signs of cancer? :D

The thing I don't understand though, Is why Eloise Hawking WANTED Des to push the button, which would keep the plane from crashing, but then wanted them to go back in season 5.

Desmond may have been there to push the button but he was also there to forget to push the button on Sept 22. If someone else had been there they might not have missed pushing the button.

Do you think maybe Eloise was trying to keep Des from saving Charlie at all? It was Charlie knowing the code that set up the events that lead to people leaving and the big mess and time flashes and Dan getting shot.

I've got a few thoughts on this.

One is that Charlie was always almost dying and visions of him in danger.. pft. What else is new?

Another... Charlie wouldn't have been in the looking glass at all if not for Des telling him to go. He wouldn't have asked for that and Jack wouldn't have assigned it to him. Maybe he wasn't supposed to be there at all.

Next... If it did happen like it was supposed to, maybe Eloise was trying to keep from shooting her kid by convincing Des he couldn't change Charlie's fate so he'd let him die before he got to the looking glass.
