Desmond's Timeline

I brought this up in another thread but thought it might deserve its own.


So, we know Desmond got on the Island in 2001 (3 years ago).

We know in 1996 he was in the army (even though Lostpedia says it was 1997 - is there a episode source for that year?)

Do we know what year Desmond got out of jail?

Because I was thinking that those time flashes might explain why he was dishonorably discharged from the army.

LOSTPEDIA says:

"Sometime around 1997, Desmond joined the Royal Scots (now The Royal Regiment of Scotland)...During the time he served, Desmond managed to reach the rank of a Lance-Corporal, before getting discharged and serving time in the Southway Garrison military prison, for failing to "follow orders". His exact offense, however, is still unknown. "

I think those flashes = failing to follow orders.


Do we know what rank he was when we saw him in 1996?

Did anyone refer to him?

He had no rank ... that looked like boot to me.

So I guess he was in the army for a few years and got discharged for something else.

I think he got kicked out probably for going AWOL. I have no idea where he was stationed and how far it is from Oxford and Penny's flat, but he said he had 2 days leave when he talked to Penny the first time, and he probably was gone that time. When he was with Daniel, he wakes up sitting down in a chair and Daniel said he had been out for 75 minutes, then after he sees Penny's father, he passes out in the bathroom and later in a stairwell and we dont know how long those flashes were and it was night when he saw Penny, so he probably didnt make it back to base in time and they considered him awol.

Thanks for putting things in order Lostfan. Something about the time line has me curious. In The Constant, Des tells Penny he will talk to her in 8 years. Then she talks to him in the stadium in Live Together, Die Alone, but there is no mention of the conversation they had at her flat in the Constant about the "8 years". Did I miss something?

Then she talks to him in the stadium in Live Together, Die Alone, but there is no mention of the conversation they had at her flat in the Constant about the "8 years". Did I miss something?


Well, if you put it in terms of how we are watching the episodes, they don't mention anything about calling in 8 years because it technically hasn't happened yet. He met her in the stadium 3 years ago. He only 'time traveled' a few days ago. I believe that the timeline presented here is wrong.

If you forget about having to group the episodes together...

In the Constant episode, 1996 Desmond jumped into 2004 Desmond. So when Desmond said in 1996 that he'd call in 8 years, he didn't realize they'd see each other again before then.
