This "constant" gizmo is a puzzle-just how do you think this works to save you from being lost? Who are the other Losties constants and do they all need one?

I don't think they will because they haven't left the island yet and traveled through whatever caused Desmond to need a constant. Also, they weren't subjected to heavy doses of radiation like Desmond was, which Faraday suggested caused the whole problem.

I think that if it is something/someone that u have a true connection with....the heart is involved and this is what grounds that person.....no matter how screwed up things get...the constant helps them to remember who they are....god its late and i don't think that i am making sense anymore..lol

Thanks! I think I'm going to need a constant pain pill to get my mind around this time stuff. I'll bet they move on quickly in the story while we all try to figure it out. cheeky fellows!

i think you only need one if you find yourself jumping in and out and its beyond your control. the constant is something both time existances can relate to so and does what it says on the tin - is constant.

but in 1996, when Faraday told Desmond that he would have to find the constant, Desmond asked if this constant could be a person, to which Faraday, looking unsure said that he thinks so.
So, as someone pointed out already. Due to a high lever of radiation or whatever, they will need a constant in both times, or possibly die....
Desmond had Penny, and Faraday will have Desmond. While George Minkowski just went nuts and died.....
The only other one the could have radiation would be Locke, since he was in the hatch when it blew up.....ummmm, wonder who will be his constant ?

yes but we are not sure what bearings the plane came in on and if they will even suffer then sdide effects..
but if so - they all seem to be linked in someway so they almost ahve a huge choice lol!
What if Jack's constant is his Dad? Did'nt really think this through, but in the flash forward Jack made a reference that his Dad was upstairs at the hospital.

But how will Locke get knowledge of his need for a constant? Or was it revealed to him that this would happen to him if he tried to get off the island and that's why he doesn't want to leave?

Yeah, Locke I'd be worried about.
As for the storm, I don't think it has anything to really do with the becoming unstuck in time. I think it is more a temporal anomoly caused by the electromagnetic field affecting some pre-existing condition.
The pilot has gone through the storm twice without a problem.

I thought two things were required
1) previous exposure to high levels of radiation
2) passing through the the island's magnetic field wall
Minoski and the other guy could have been exposed to radiation working in the radio shack on an experimental ship.
Miles in the lab
Desmond in the hatch

Couldn't Faraday have been Desmond's Constant? They could have used each other.

Because he hasn't been exposed to radiation in the past - read my other posts - 2 things required for time travel, radiation AND passage through the field. Anyone that doesn't time-jump hasn't had one of the 2 requirements met.

But Faraday exists in the past and in 1996 and in 2004, just as Penny did. After Desmond meets Faraday in 1996, he should be able to call him in 04 and be fine.

I don't think the constant can be just any old thing. It needs to be something of significance to the person in order to provide a grounding in each reality.
For Des, Penny obviously qualifies because of the emotional bonds.
For Faraday, it gets a bit time-paradox'ey. Desmond can be his constant because Desmond represents the key to his "discoveries" when he visits Faraday in 1996 and gives him the machine settings, creating the Eureka moment. From that time on, Faraday knows he MUST meet Des in the future to give him the information needed to close the loop. Des is the most important person in Faraday's life from then on.
