Maybe you should move to Hawaii there. I've heard the only problem is that it moves once in awhile. Old cranky relatives won't be able to visit. :p

Hey Lis, that was just the earth shattering result of my radio interview with WBBM Newsradio 780 in Chicago this morning!!! lol.
Seriously though, it is a scary thing to go through. Been there, done that when I lived in Los Angeles. My sliding glass doors kept bowing and my chandelier was swaying...and it was only a 3 pointer. Scary stuff and I'm glad you and the kids and doggie are okay!

It was very scary!! It's so unexpected here that my mind was just racing to try and figure out what the heck was going on. My windows were shaking and I could feel it through the floor but it just didn't make sense. Then my pets all started freaking out and I was pretty sure it was an earthquake. It only lasted a few seconds but you're right Booty, it felt like a long time!

We had a 6.4 quake when I lived in Taiwan, it didn't seem so bad since I was outside but it seemed to last for a long time. Luckily we only lived on the 3rd floor of an apartment so itwasn't damaged. The higher the floor you live on, the more the building sways. My husband's office on the 11th floor was a mess. A friend told me that is why so many people in that region have wind chimes because then you can hear when an earthquake is starting.

Wow, I can't imagine! 6.4 is pretty strong! This one was tiny but very unexpected. Still, as you said, we have friends whose apartments and offices on higher floors really sustained a fair bit of damage. Wind chimes are a great idea! I never had a reason to really think about it before but it makes perfect sense. Thanks, Danielle. :)

When I first moved to Taiwan, I had to go to the doctors because I kept feeling dizzy. The doctor said it was stress. When I mentioned it to a friend she said the same thing happened to her and it turned out that it was down to the approx 3 small earthquakes that they have every day there! They slight swaying was making us dizzy. I found that the wind chime confirmed whether it was just me feeling dizzy or whether something was really happening. It was really useful!

If theres going to be a decent size earthquake and you have the ear for it you can actually hear it coming. The wind chimes is a good idea. I can remember my first earthquake I was in Guam and I was in my Apt sitting on my bed and I noticed something different than my basketball fell from a bookshelve than the whole place shook for about 8 seconds.
The strangest one I ever witnessed is when I was in a bathtub.

A friend of mine is Peruvian and his family owns a big chunk of land there. I I'm moving there late 2011, and doing a DJ tour of South America, ending in Peru, where we'll stay when we get there, and we'll start to work on Inca-Tek, an ecosystem festival we're going to do at Macchu Pichu in 2012 (http://incatek.ning.com/) . Anyone is welcome to join us. In the meantime we're going to farm. Yes, farm... I felt it too! I thought my cat was under my bed causes trouble so I jumped up and looked everywhere, but he was in the living room, hiding, probably because of the quake. I woke up at exactly 3:59am, which is the same as about 25 people I talked to. There was a bigger one five or six years ago at 1:18am, dont ask how I remember the time, I have a weird thing with numbers. I literally am unable to forget number sequences or important sets of numbers, like time and exact distances. Yes, I am weird. But everyone else on here does odd things too, so post them! Ill make a thread called, "I am weird, but so is everyone else."

I've watched some shows on Earthquakes and supposedly there is a huge fault that starts in southern Illinois. The show was on the fact, you can have earthquakes anywhere. The show hypothesized that eventually there would be earthquakes in southern Illinois or anywhere along the Mississippi river. It is thought that there is so much "energy" built up along this fault line that when it goes it will really go. We are talking about a Earthquake in the 12-14+ magnitude range. And the show hypothesizes that such an earth quake could be capable of completely rerouting the Mississippi river.
Nothing to worry about though...just letting you know.

Yeah, we've been taught about the New Madrid fault since I was a kid but this recent earthquake wasn't on that fault line, strangely enough. This was a previously undiscovered fault line out west that acted up the other day. Conspiracies are flying around that it was actually a Fermi Lab accident but that's just crazy talk....or is it?!
