OK - we know Dan and Des are constants, but does Ben, Michael, Walt, Richard, Frank, and Charlotte need constants since they have traveled from/to the island?

Charlotte seemed to know the whole constant story. What she didn't know is Dan needed to tell Des because Des was Dan's constant. And Minkowski needed a constant because he tried to get to the island.

So who else needs a constant?

I think it is going to be more then we think. Maybe Claire needed a constant and couldn't get one and that is what happened to her.

remember desmond made his own way there via boat race and then again when he tried to escape so he deviated from the safe bearings as did minkowski and that other guy when they tried to find the island. cant answer for dan but this coupled with the exposure is whats causing them to spontaeneously travel and thats why THEY need the cnstants. i think!

We dont know WHO NEEDS a constant.

I guess... well. now that you said that. anyone that time travels needs one. I thought before it was just if you exposed to radiation/magentism. But if Minkowski wasn't exposed, and he croaked, and he didn't know to have a constant...... then it makes sense that anyone leaving or entering the island..... UNLESS THEY STAY ON THE EXACT BEARING..... will need a constant.

That is why Ben told Micheal "stay on this bearing, and only this bearing!" He made sure to give Micheal the exact bearing to leave.......

Does anyone think BEN has a constant?

I only believe it would be people who would have had exposure to significant electromagnetic radiation before coming in contact with the field.

Edit: Minkowski being around the radio equipment constantly might have been enough.

I think it only affects you if you've been exposed to large amounts of radiation or electromagnetism. We know Dan probably has because of his experiments and obviously Desmond when he turned the fail safe key but we don't think they explained what Minkowski had been exposed to. But thats why Sayid and Frank were okay. So I don't think Charlotte or anyone else crossing to and from the island would need constants.

and when he was dieing he said "can't... make it.... back...." like, he was REALLY REALLY trying, but got stuck!

AH - HA good thinking. Is that why they traveled by the submarine? I wonder why it didn't affect Sayid since Dan didn't know it or did he before he found his notebook? I am kinda confused.

well, there is a magnet or 2 in there. but nothing like what Desmond, or even Faraday, went through with their exposure.

But.... it makes sense since Sayid and the Pilot (dan?) are not time shifting but Desmond is!

Right, but he was sitting in the radio room constantly on the boat and before that for who knows how much of his life.

I'm guessing that all the flashbacks we have seen in the first few seasons may start to make sense .why so many people came in contact with each other in round about ways they may be constants in one way or another.Just trying to figure out why so many people on the plan have crossed paths.

it was already said that the people on the plain were PICKED to get to the island. Remember, the plane crash LOOKED like an accident, but it wasn't. Those people were chosen for a reason.

I thought it was explained that the plane crashing was because of the guy in the hatch not typing in the numbers in time.

Ben knew them all when the crashed. the others knew them already... they were chosen to be on there. I remember that being said.....

now... not pushing the button was the reason the plane crashed yeah... sooo.... hahahha.

Well Ben and the others did have television and access to computers. They also had the ability to leave the island with the submarine as well as what other magical stuff they have hidden up their sleeves. Locke's dad for example.

Seems like everyone was exposed when they didn't push the button remember they covered their ears and everything. The pushing the button was so people didn't get exposed to the magnetic field. Maybe when Desmond left on his boat, that is when he went off course then went back in time and that is when he saw Jack. When he was found on that boat when it drifted back wasn't he passed out?
Maybe when Sawyer, Michael, Walt left on their boat they went off course too and met those people from a long time ago- a sort of mini time travel.
