Problem with Desmonds timeline (I think)

Early we were told Desmond left Penny for the military which appears to be in 1996 or so. They were broken up. Early in the show Desmond was with Penny soon before we met him at the stadium and soon before he went on his yacht ride which eventually got him to the island.
My question is if they broke up in 1996 how can he be with her in 2000 or 2001 which was probabally when he went sailing b/c she said she had been looking for him for 3 years on the phone.:eek:

I think he was in the race as an attempt to get her attention...not because they were already back together.

She was also wearing a wedding band. When she met up with him at the stadium I don't think she was married. I'm assuming he disappeared soon after that. I can't imagine her getting married in the 3 years she has been searching for him.

They were not "together" when he was at the stadium.

In 1996, he's in boot camp and had recently broken up with Penny. Over the course of the next few years, he's in the army, raises to the rank of Lance Corporal and then gets kicked out for disobeying orders, or something, and goes to jail for some years.

We then see him get released from prison, Penny's father tells him that she's moved on and not to contact her. And he starts training for the race.

While he's training at the stadium (around 2001, since that's when he crahses on the island) Penny tracks him down and asks him why he hasn't contacted her since he got released from prison and he says he needs to get his honor back. So, he goes on the race, shipwrecks on the island and is there for the next 3 years.

Good points. Also it seemed as though Penny had not talked to Desmond since 1996 although they met at the stadium well after that. :confused:

She wasn't wearing a wedding ring. She was wearing a band on her right ring finger, but nothing on her left hand.

Yes. It was before they broke up and he joined the army.

Remember when he went back in time after the hatch blew?

what does penny's father know? he bought the log for the black rock that shows up on the island for a hefty sum. i think the ships crew/passengers may have been the original "crash" victims and the contents of the log will be informative. how does he know to purchase the log? didn't he also sponsor desmond in that boat race? did he try to get him stranded on the island?

I don't think he sponsored him. I think it was just his race he entered.

Penny's dad knows A LOT. We have no idea how much, but I'm sure he's involved somehow.

BUT Penny's dad did not sponsor Desmond in the race. He sponsored the race itself, which is why Des wanted to win it and show up Penny's dad.

Mr. Widemore sponsored the entire race. I believe he created it to find the island. Remember? It was libby's boat Desmond used.
