During the auction where Desmond found Penny's dad they were auctioning off a journal from an 1845 English trading ship "The Black Rock". This is the ship we've seen in the jungle on the island where they've gotten dynamite before. Penny's dad ended up winning the journal, thus explaining why he and Penny know so much about the island (possibly). Maybe someone can help me remember something though. The auctioneer said name of the seller was Tobard Henso. Haven't we heard this name before? And who is it? It may be nothing, but I think this is a name that we've heard before. Henso...that isn't Sun's father is it? Just thought I'd throw that out there to see if anyone knows.

The name was Hanso as in The Hanso Foundation.

Know what I was wondering? I was wondering if the men lost at sea on that ship were the original "others".....maybe they got their change of clothes from the Dharma folks.....

The "Hanso" foundation is the original Dharma iniciative. Charles Widmore bought the journal and must have found out about the island. I believe he created the sailboat race to find the island. I believe it's Charles's Freighter.

You need to just go to LOSTPEDIA and read up on it all.

The Black Rock's captain is believed to be Magnus Hanso, great-grandfather of Alvar Hanso, who was head of the Hanso Foundation which funded and ran Dharma.

That would explain their existence on the island!

I think that's definitely possible. But the 4-toed statue points to a civilization that pre-dates the 19th century slave ship.

i think there is every chance that the crew may be the original others or some of them anyway.

again, we just dont know enough about the black rock - its getting frustrating!!

I know....that's something I've yet to figure out. But remember when Juliet had that trial and was almost put to death last season? Remember...there was a blonde-haired woman who oversaw the adjudication process. There was a group of "others" with HER, who seemed to be able to come and go from the island....they havn't been since Juliet's trial. I wonder if there are a chain of islands with different colonies. Maybe that is where Michael has been; on another island with more of the "others".

Of course it is all just speculation at this point....it's fun though, isn't it?

My question is: did someone from the Black Rock make it OFF the island? Otherwise how would the journal contain any useful information ABOUT the island?

i think they said pirates retrieved it 7 years after the ship was lost but again - that may be a cover up lol! even if it wasnt, doesnt mean that whoever didnt survive for some time and write some interesting yarns in it.

wasn't the journal found on an island close to Madegasgar (sp) and that's of the east coast of Africa. says that the first mate was the one who took it off the island. How did he get off the island?????
