Maybe the writers were very savy using the Alvar Hanso/Norway connection:
Norway just opened a frozen "doomsday vault deep w/i an Arctic mountain where millions of plant seeds will be stored to safeguard against wars or natural disasters wiping out food crops round the globe.Norway's govt. built the vault for 9.1 million dollars.Norway's P.M., Jens Stoltenberg, states "It is the Noah's Ark for securing biological diversity for future generations." It will hold as many as 4.5 million crop seeds from all over the world.Daily operations will be overseen by NorGen, a gene bank in an old coal mine on Svalbard( a remote archipelago) that is jointly owned by the Nordic countries.

Very interesting connection BB. I heard some mention of this, but not in this detail. I have always been curious as to the writer's influences.
