The Journal Being Auctioned would be the one of the Black Rock!
that right the lost ship in the middle of the island. This guys is the key to LOST. He is the ships captain that why penny had the ships number/frequency!!!. So he is trying to find this LOST island and NOT trying to find des since he has been searching since before he was lost. When pennys father was buying the journal he was most likely looking for clue to find the island!!!!!

Does it count as a “clue” if it was blatantly obvious?

When you say "he is the ship's captain," who are you talking about? And what do you mean the "ships' number/frequence"?

Oooooooh! I see! haha, I thought you were saying Penny's father was the captain of the Black Rock and the Black Rock had a radio frequency. hahaha

But, no. The actor who plays the ship's captain has already been released. It's not Penny's father.

Now, it's entirely possible Penny's father organized/funded the freighter mission.

It's believed so.

Penny's father (Widmore), Hanso and Sun's father (Paik) are all connected and involved with the island somehow.

You mat recall that the Auctioner noted that the contents of the Black Rock Journal were known only to the current selling owner, drum roll, Alvar Hanso!

It was actually the family of Tovard Hanso. Who that exactly is, I don't know. But it's the same family.

I'm pretty sure he said Alvar Hanso. See here: http://www.thehansofoundation.org/

No, I know who Alvar Hanso is.

But the auctioneer said the book belonged to the family of Tovard Hanso.

LOSTPEDIA: "In 1996, Charles Widmore is present at an auction for lot 2342, the ledger of the Black Rock's first mate. The contents have not been published and are unknown to anyone outside the seller's family, Tovard Hanso's family"

Tovard Hanso was the owner of the Black Rock ledger, the journal of the first mate of the Black Rock sailing vessel. Hanso sold the ledger at a Southfield's auction to Charles Widmore for £380,000 in 1996. Prior to the sale, only members of Hanso's family were privy to the contents of the ledger. ("The Constant")

Tovard is presumably related to Magnus Hanso, the presumed owner of the Black Rock, and Alvar Hanso, CEO of the Hanso Group and founder of the Hanso Foundation.

Maybe this will help...

Auctioneer Scene Script:

Auctioneer: "The Black Rock set sail from Portsmouth, England, March 22nd, 1845 on a trading mission for the Kingdom of Siam when she was tragically lost at sea. The only known artifact of this journey, is the journal of the ship's first mate which was discovered among the artifacts of pirates on Eva Saint Marie, Madagascar seven years later. The contents of this journal have never been made public nor are known to anyone outside the family of the seller, Tovard Hanso. We open the bidding on lot 2342 at 150,000 pounds."

(screen goes to Charles Widmore looking smug and holding an auctioneers lot number of 755)

Auctioneer: "150,000 sir, for 160, do i hear 160, 160 sir, 170 sir, 180 on the phone, 200,000 pounds, 220,000 pounds, 240, 260 thousand pounds sir, 280, on the phone i have 300,000 (Desmond walks in), 320, 340 thousand pounds, 360, 380, 380,000 pounds do i hear 400,000 thousand pounds, going once, going twice, sold for 380,000 pounds to bidder 755".

Desmond: 'Mr Widmore"

Charles: "Desmond"

Desmond: "Can i have a word Sir?"

Charles’ Assistant: "I’m sorry Mr.Widmore"

Charles: No, its fine.

Auctioneer . . ."Possession of Charles Dickens when he died, we open the bidding on this lot"

Charles: "Walk with me"

End Scene.

The Black Rock set sale on a trading mission for the kingdom of Siam - which is known today as Thailand. Now, it’s important to remember that the auctioneer didn’t say the boat was bound for Siam, just that it was under contract with the kingdom.

The ship was lost at sea. We know that because the dammed thing is sitting in the middle of the island with the survivors. While the ship is now a home for birds on the island the first mate’s journal evidently made it back to the real world where it was discovered somewhere near Madagascar seven years, or 1852, after the ship left Portsmouth.

Bidding starts in the room, and notably present is Penny's father. Several scary-looking people are bidding on the journal against Charles Widmore - who wins the bid. Desmond shows up and sees Widmore as he leaves, and asks for a word.

The bidding number was 2342 same as the number that was used in Faraday's machine" 2.342 and of course same numbers in 4 8 15 16 23 42. "the big thing to me is that Widmore won the bid, and made sure of it. As soon as he won the auction, he got up and left. Why was it so important for him to get this book?

The Captain of the Black Rock was named Magnus Hanso. Is he is the great grandfather of Alvar Hanso? Tovard Hanso could be Alvaŕs son or grandson. Is it of any importance, or just a red herring?

I don't think there are any red herrings on this show lol. So if Widmore is the Captain of the ship, or at least is funding it, than who is the "mysterious black guy" and why is Daniel Faraday on the team? Perhaps this is an indication that Widmore is involved with Alvar Hanso and was working on his behalf to buy the book?

The mysterious guy is Addodon (spelling?) from what I've read elsewhere. Unsure of his exact connections whether Darhma or Hanso or Whitmore or Santa's chief elf! A Black Rock history is at lostipedia.
