First Lissa reports an earthquake in Illinois (http://lost.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12429&highlight=earthquake) about 2 weeks ago and now this!

The Ewa Beach, Hawaii-based tsunami center says the first waves are expected to arrive at 11:19 a.m. Saturday (4:19 p.m. EST).
The center called for "urgent action to protect lives and property" in Hawaii, which is among 53 nations and territories subject to tsunami warnings.

Initial reports say the tsunami could be well over 100 ft high when it hits, much higher than the one in the Indian Ocean in 2004.

It was a massively powerful earthquake, but from what I'm hearing it shouldn't be a big wave. However, at least they are prepared. In 2004 many didn't even know what a tsunami was.

Just 10 hours for the tsunami to go from Chile to Hawaii - surprising - I think that's about the time it would take to fly there - fortunately they slow down as they approach the coastline.

Thanks for this Moe. I hope our friends all around the world will be safe and will be able to reach out to us to let us know how they are. The more this event sinks in, the larger my list is growing of those to possibly affected.

From MSNBC

Chileans near the epicenter were tossed about as if shaken by a giant. Local radio reported 100 people were missing in a collapsed building in hard-hit Concepcion, one of Chile's largest cities with around 670,000 inhabitants. Firefighters were working to put out fires throughout the city, and most of the buildings in the city center were destroyed.

At least three people were killed by huge earthquake-triggered waves that smashed into Chile's Robinson Crusoe Island, a remote, rocky island named for the fictional, stranded sailor, Reuters reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 56 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles at 3:34 a.m. (1:34 a.m. ET). The quake shook buildings in Argentina's capital of Buenos Aires, and was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil — 1,800 miles to the east.

At least 23 aftershocks were reported, including one registering at 6.9 on the Richter scale.

Yes, Alaska has had a warning since early this am. They have just included Oregon and Washington state in this whole mess, too, besides California. This doesn't mean they will have a huge tsunami but they will surely feel the effects of heavy and dangerous waves and currents. Just what they need, I'm sure. As if the pacific coast is so stable already in California.

Yeah, newer reports aren't indicating anything very large like what I had first heard. But even a 15-20 ft wave can be a problem for a well-prepared state like Hawaii. They get big surf all the time, but a tsunami is a different kind of wave from a storm swell.

I know. It's not just about the size, it's about the power. It's actually a series of waves, not just one wave. Horrific. I wonder how I missed those tweets from Darlton. I've been logged in all day.

Tsunami waves are not like regular waves that break on shore. It's more like a wave that continuously pushes the water inland based on the height of it. As a tsunami approaches the shore, it sucks the water away from the shoreline. This makes the wave even larger. Since the coast is usually on an angle into the ocean and is very low, the wave just rushes forward and keeps going and they can keep coming for a very long time. It's not one wave but a wall of water that is pushing forward. That is why tsunami are so dangerous.

NOAH just said that the tsunami could go inland 1 mile traveling at 35 mph.

What's good topographically about the Hawaiian islands is that they have steep slopes from the coastline to the mountains. Yes, there are some flat areas along the coast such as Hilo on the Big Island (historically a tsunami target), central Maui and parts west of Honolulu. But fortunately it is relatively easy for people on the coast to relocate upcountry. If your friend and Mr Holloway live in one of the areas I'm thinking of, they should be okay because of the elevation. Downtown is another matter though.

The area where LOST does much of its beach/jungle filming (North Shore of Oahu) should be very safe from any effects of the tsunami -- the waves would be focused on the other side of the island.

Really? I'm wondering if it's due to some wrap-around effect the waves coming from the southeast might have?

I think it's because the islands are small, the ocean is big and they are expecting a pretty strong tsunami. It's going to be hitting Hilo in about 15 mintues or so. Let's just hope that it will turn out to be a big nothing and everyone is safe.

Tsunami wave update: Ventura, California has a lot of damage from the Tsunami. I have a feeling that a lot of larger waves are headed to Hawaii

notsolost42
02-28-2010, 04:10 PM
First wave to hit Hilo at about 5 1/2 feet and is receeding again. Water washed over a small island Coconut Island, off Hilo and is going back out. This is only the first wave and there could easily be more powerful waves to come.

DarkPhoenix-24

Chile just had another aftershock and it was registered at a 6.9. They have had a total of 23 aftershocks and the death toll (so far) is 214 people.

No americans are reported to be hurt in Chile and Ventura, California. CNN reports that there are more people out on surf boards now outside of the Hilo Harbor area.

Reports are showing that the waves and swelling are getting bigger and the third wave is about hit soon. Maui has shut down water use completely, however the Pacific Tsunami Center are saying they will keep the warning up for an hour more and will let everything go back to normal IF all conditions are in the clear.

So far, the Pacific Tsunami Center feel like Hawaii has dodged a bullet.

That was so amazing! How cool is that!!!! Thank you for sharing it. Do you know if that was Alister Cook narrating? It sounded like him I think.
We just had a big run of sharks down here, 100's just off shore chasing schools of fish.

Anyone watching MSNBC? They did an interview with a geologist a little while ago. She said that the after shocks are so intense that she expects there could be another major earthquake in Chile! I sure hope not.

agreed. Chile has had some of the worst earthquakes compared to everyone else. I think California has had one major earthquake and Chile is just covered in them when you look back in history. I could be wrong, but geez, I feel bad for them.

A little excitement today. We rode it out at a friend's house in the mountains. William spent almost two hours on the jungle rope swing.

Home now and everyone is safe. Watched the tide go in and out-- it was interesting how quickly it changed.

Thanks for the PM's. We're all good.

Cheers,
db

Gotta give the state government credit for this one. We had plenty of warning and everyone was calm and efficient. We got the evacuation call five hours before it was due to hit.

Thanks for that. We're all safe. The silver lining in this for me was hiking around the in the mountains watching the kids swinging off vines.

Interesting to note how little we pay attention to the natural world around us until something goes wrong.

Japan is waiting for a 10' tsunami to come onshore any minute now.

After initially canceling its advisories, Japan issued "major" tsunami warnings Sunday morning for three northern coastal provinces. About 245,000 households were evacuated amid predictions of nine-foot waves. However, initial reports of the tsunami surge Sunday afternoon were from 4 to 12 inches.

I am so glad Hawaii was spared. The sad part is that now the news was criticizing for over reacting. Ok, no one can win for losing. Come on, rather be safe than sorry. The last Tsunami that hit Hawaii killed alot of people in Hilo.

Thank you mother nature for keeping this beautiful place safe!

The problem is, that the media didn't get the spectacular tsunami that the wanted to see in Hawaii. They were just pissed off that they sat there "for nothing". the media does not care about the safety of others as long as they get their story, their image, their report, etc. Even if a major tsunami did smack Hawaii, the media would have found some other way to criticize the state of Hawaii for any deaths. I've never been fond of the media ever since they started talking crap about our men and women over seas fighting for us.
