View Full Version : Just a little mind traveling theory.

So, after watching last nights episode I started to realize something: To begin with, in the beginning of the episode right after the helicopter pilot got off course Desmond went, well what we first presumed to be, crazy. Of course we later found out that his mind was somehow traveling back and forth in time. The odd thing though was that Daniel knew exactly what was happening to him and how to "fix" it. He also asked a very peculiar question to Jack, "has Desmond been exposed to any radiation recently"? Which naturally Jack had no idea. Now obviously Daniel knows way more than he is letting on. As do all of the other supposed rescuers. So, I started thinking. We all know that Desmond has indeed been exposed to radiation & electromagnetism which from the sound of it helped conclude what happened to him, right! However, what really off set the "mind time jumping" experience was going off course while leaving this mysterious Island. Which is basically what happened to George Mankowski (communications officer on the freighter that was tied to the bed). Only George was trying to get onto the Island, not leave it. Anyway, so to get to my point, everyone on flight 815 was exposed to some kind of electromagnetic storm when they first crashed on the Island. In addition to that some other people were in the hatch with Desmond when it exploded/imploded. Therefore they too were exposed to the radiation. Now, if Desmond & George had the same "side effects" Daniel was talking about than maybe they aren't the only ones who can or have had this. When Rousso said her crew became ill, I just assumed she meant physically sick, but now I'm beginning to wondering if she actually meant mentally ill. If her crew members had the same side effects as Desmond & George they definitely would appear to have gone crazy. Another thing, Charlie, Locke & Mr. Eko were in the hatch and were exposed to the radiation. So, will Locke have the same thing happen to him if he tries to leave the Island. This could also explain how Charlie was able to visit Hurley in the mental hospital & be dead at the same time. Charlie even said he knew he was dead, but he was there too and then slapped Hurley. So, basically to sum up what I am trying to say is, it is very possible that anyone could potentially experience this time/space travel. So we need to pay very close attention to every little detail because we now know that everyones perception of time is off and if exposed to certain things anyone could get lost in time.

Yes! and maybe Jack had it happen and went back to his past to talk to Hurley and make sure that Hurley was on the island to be his constant.

Also maybe Radzinsky saying the numbers was a mind jumper too.

I thought that about Charlie (future Charlie visiting Hurley and telling him to "get to work' basically)

That whole thing in the mental institute with Jack visiting and Charlie visiting could have been in the past before the island but with future versions of jack and charlie visiting.

oooooh! Brain hurt....

Good work! When Hurley was first shown back in the mental institution a few episodes ago I was convinced that it was a flashback. My girlfriend had to convince me it wasn't a flashback when the "mysterious black man" came to visit him and talk about the plane crash, and I hadn't thought of that until I read your post. This concept that all of the crash survivors would experience this same time travel effect when they leave the island opens a lot of possibilities. What if all of the scenes we saw of Hurley in the mental institution that are supposedly flash forwards are in fact flashbacks, and Charlie and Jack visiting him, like the above poster said, are just visiting from the future? Though this would also bring up the question of why Hurley wouldn't know about the crash already before it happened...that's the slippery slope of time travel I guess.

I have one question though. Why was Desmond experiencing the effects of this time travel last season before he left the island? Was it just because he had been exposed to a whole heck of a lot more radiation than everyone else since he lived in the Hatch?

EW freaky thought!! i think des exp problems earlier cuz of the major em /rad effects when he turned the key...

Yeah, I mean he was sent directly back in time as soon as the "event" occurred (when the hatch blew).

yes, but if in fact they are flashforwards, and Hurley did go crazy leaveing the island like Desmond, then wouldn't you expect him to have the same side effects as desmond? Desmond claimed he didn't recognize anyone, and in the flashforwards/flashbacks hurly seems to recognize everyone. He seemed to recognize charlie in the gas station, and when charlie came to visit him in the institution Hurley new who he was he was weirded out by the whole thing because charlie is dead.

Like I've said before "Lost" is part "Somewhere in time" part "Back To The Future" and part "Grounghog Day".

OKAY WOW! THIS IS MAKING ME THINK!

well When Jack Has the beard in the 3rd season finale it is made to believe that it is a flash foward, but indeed could be a flash back (JACK'S REFERENCE TO HIS FATHER) and also in the truck on the radio was an old 90's rock song i want to say it was nirvana. but anyway that would also mean the person in the coffin died before the crash?

can't really remember right now so correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't desmond only start seeing the future after he left on the sailboat and and came drifting back? maybe that's when it happened to him? because minkowski said that it happened to them when they took a boat out to see the island.

Good thinking. Now, throw this into the mix. The Black Pearl was ship wrecked on the island. There were pirates on it. They too were struck by the space/time complexities of the island. The original others, not the Dharma Initiative leftovers, are the pirates! Remember in season 2, I believe, when Sawyer and Jin were looking for Michael after he ran off to try and find Walt. They were hiding low in the underbrush as a group of the others walked by. Think of that scene. Right out of Peter Pan. The clothing, dirty feet and the dragging of the teddy bear. I think it was a big clue dumped in our laps way back then. It would fit in to the space/time difference also. They have not aged very much since time passes so slowly on the island. Please read Stephen Hawking. He is a world renown physicist and discusses theories of space/time. One of the others was reading his book on the island, about a year or so before it was actually published!

Hey guys,

So the flashback/flash-forward intertwining theories are all really good and I even thought the same thing. That some of the supposed flash-forward’s were actually flashbacks and vise versa. However, I recently read something very interesting the writers of the show said. Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof said and I quote "Lost is complex and dense, but we are very conscious of the limits. If we are going to jump time, we're not going to jump narrative order within the time jumps, too". They also said, not verbatim, that the show is already confusing enough. They don't want the show to become way too confusing for the viewers so they feel they have no idea when the rug will pulled from under them. The characters are meant to show their suffering the consequences for leaving the Island and their friends behind. The writers want people to understand how they feel. So, I think that all of the flash-forwards are actually flash-forwards. I also think in the flash-forwards all of their physical bodies are in that present time, but possibly their minds would be greatly affected and would “time jump”. Ok, so with that being said, someone had commented on the fact that if Hurley did get affected, he wasn’t affected the same way Desmond was. Neither was Mankowski. He knew exactly where he was, who he was and he knew he had been changed due to trying to get onto the Island. He said so himself. Not to mention, Daniel said there would be side effects, but he never said everyone would have the same side effects. However, I don’t think Hurly, Jack, Kate, Sayid or Aaron have the exact same thing Desmond has, but I do feel very strongly that all of their physical bodies have been altered in some way more now that they have left the Island. Maybe they all have something similar to what Desmond has, but who knows. I also think the reason Desmond has been more affected than anyone else is because he has been in the hatch for a long time. He, more than anyone else thus far, has been exposed to high levels of radiation & electromagnetism for years or at least that is his perception of how long he has been there. I don’t know if this helps. I certainly hope so. My head hurts from thinking of all the different possibilities.
