I just can't wrap my mind around the scene where Ben went to be judged by Smokey, and what we now (think) we know about Smokey. And the scene where Ben summoned Smokey to kill the freighter soldiers. If Smokey is
is evil, and the opposition to Jacob, Ben would have had to have known. Dogen knew, Richard knew. Why would Ben possibly need to be judged by their evil enemy. Why would Smokey willingingly kill the soldiers to help Ben? I need some of those brilliant minds out there to explain this to me.

i am hardley brilliant but ben is the one who felt he needed to be judged or he was bs'ing flocke when he told flocke that and flocke called him on it and went along with it. not certain ben was expecting to see smokie the way he did. looked like he was going to crap his pants :)

Yeah, Ben was the ultimate BS'er. Haven't seen much of that lately though.

Smokey needed Ben so he would kill Jacob. Keamy was trying to take Ben out of the picture.

yes, smokey needed Ben, but why would Ben think Smokey would help him? Are you saying Ben was clueless that Smokey was the opponent of Jacob?

No but apparently he had reason to believe that he would come. He did say that they had to hide.

I can't figure out why they were so afraid of Keamy and company. They handled them pretty well once they confronted them.

I still think that there are 2 Smokies. One is Flocke (Anti-Jacob) and one is... well FOR Jacob. We know that Flocke is the smoke monster but we are assuming that it is also Anti-Jacob. Have we seen this someplace? If this is the case, then there can be a pro-Jacob smoke monster.

Remember that Richard described the smoke monster as a type of security system. Also, A smoke monster told Ben to follow Locke. When Ben told this to Flocke, he seemed pleasantly surprised. If he was the one-and-only smoke monster then he would have known this. This would also explain why Ben was able to summon the smoke monster, why we've seen the smoke monster enter the temple before and more importantly, why the smoke monster let Mr. Ecko go one time and the other time killed him.

Agree with boutte.
Adding this:
Ben was limited on his knowledge of the Smokey Monster. He was telling the truth when he said they didn't have a name for it.

He knew it was formidable, for sure, and knew how to release it but I really don't know what made him think it wouldn't also go after HIM.

I have been wondering whether when Ben said a "war was coming", he meant with Widmore or perhaps, in light of recent events, he was actually referring to the great showdown regarding Jacob and MIB/Smokie.

I truly think Ben was in the dark about the true nature of Smokie being MIB and was being played totally, especially with his weird "judgement", a judgement of which never set right with me in the first place.
Now we know Smokey merely needed to get Ben's attention the only and best way he could - that being Alex!

smokey could be controlled <somewhat> as long as jacob was alive. i dont think ben knew about smokey and jacob's shared history. or what smokey really was.
