I've been rewatching season 2.
I saw the episode where Desmond was saved from killing himself because of John's banging and shouting on the hatch door.
Why didn't he immediately rush up the ladder, open the hatch and cry "come in, brother" or somesuch. After all, the man had just saved his life, why didn't he embrace him? That's what I would've done.

ok i watched it, good catch, nothing too out of the ordinary though if you think about des knew of the hostiles and the other entrance to the hatch. if they were his replacement they would knock on the front door, yes?. he was happy to hear another human voice but not trusting them to come in.

Plus the fact that John was yelling and banging alot, now I think of it. That may've made Desmond a little wary of his intentions and blowing the hatch up confirmed it.
