Let's recall Ilana's visit there in season 5. They were surprised to discover 2 things:
1. The ring of ash was broken.
2. Jabob was not in the cabin and "hasn't been in a long time. Someone else has been using it."
That means very simply that they were expecting to find the ring of ash intact and Jacob within. The "someone else using it" is clearly the MIB as we have seen Christian (and Claire and an eye) in there previously. Just like at the Temple, and even around Bram himself when fighting Smokie, the ring of ash is to keep him OUT, not in. Smokie/MIB has roamed the island at least since Oceanic 815 crashed. I take Ilana's "a long time" to mean many years.
