Last night was sick. Went back and watched Season 3, Episodes 8 (Flashes before your eyes) and Episode 17 (Catch 22). I now have large hi-def plasma and can see detail better. Found that the older lady with white hair who told Desmond that he "must go to the island and press the button or we'll all die" (who we is...the question for the ages) is the picture with the Monk who told Desmond that he wasn't cut out to be a monk, the day before he "just happened" to load wine into Penny Whitmore's vehicle. Now I'm thinking Penny might not be so golden either...but what do I know...checked the time line however and it could work...in terms of the break-up, military service, sail around the world thing...

Yeah, I wonder about Penny too. I've been wondering ever since the hatch blew up and the two guys at the listening stationed made a phone call to report it. Didn't they call Penny?

yeah....they were somewhere in south pole???(maybe not...ill have to rewatch) but they said that they got the signal......she then tried to send communications to the island but i guess didn't know where it was....on the phone call from the freightor....she started saying that she knew about the island and the research...then static before they said love u and all......

Nah ... I can't believe she's in on it.
I know he father is, but not her.
She probably know a little bit about the island because of her father and the amount of cash flow she has to work with.

I agree....I don't think she'd tell Charlie that that wasn't her boat if she was in on it, do you?

Very good point...but if the older lady with the piercing blue eyes is in the picture with the monk at the monastery (Episode 18, S. 3) it would appear that they were there to make sure that he met Penny and so on.-->from there meets her father (who was bidding on a painting of a ship and ship's manifest?)...tells him about a race around the world, make him feel incapable of marrying his daughter (plants an idea of military service), etc...sorry, the show makes me feel paranoid...lol

haha don't be sorry I think we all are conspiracy theory geeks!! I mean, c'mon, I bet a good portion of us were XFiles fans too, right? but that is an AWESOME catch. I will have to go back and watch that episode....Especially with a title like "FLASHES....BEFORE...your EYES" could be a hint. I like that the other one was titled "Catch 22" after the Vonnegut reference last nite-Catch and Slaughterhouse Five have a lot of similarities and are in the same literary canon...could be a clue too!!

What was really odd after seeing this week's episode was looking back at the events that were occuring in Desmond's life before he met Penny. He was engaged and within just a few days of marrying another woman who he had been dating for 6 years. Her brother even came to the monastery and punched Desmond in the face because of it. He then went to see her after his time of silence was up...and she asked him why...he said something like, "I was out of it lying on the street and all I can remember is this man with a rope around his waste helping me up and I knew that I was supposed to do something bigger with my life"...she was like WTF...you've don't even go to church...very odd...

Why did you post this exact same post in this forum and in the Season 4 forum?

I think Penny is sincere and was honestly looking for Desmond, with the kicker being that her father probably knew where Desmond was all along...

Penny just looked too genuinely happy to be bad. Wasn't she supposed to be marrying someone else, when she saw him at the stadium? I checked, no wedding ring!

:o

Because she's in LOVE with him....sometimes that can be bigger than money to some people. Also she may be trying to be descreet about it since she may not want her father to find out.

i believe she is really looking for desmond - she cant cut ties with him and last night when he called her reaction seemed so genuine and she told him that she loves him. I believe she was telling the truth!

Im like you. Penny is true. I don't doubt her faith to Des. I belive she will be one of the key figures in helping the Losties. Her father on the other hand comes across as deceaving and a powerfulman finacialy and bussness wise. I think he has alot of connections threw out the world. He did after all sponcer a race around the world. He was very apparant about getting Desmond fired up enough where he would take his race on. He didn't say the words but he wanted him to join the race. Im not sure Dharma's stand point since the purge. I don't know if they secretly still exist. But I belive Hanso is deceast I think Widmore took on his duties. Who ever this freighter crew is their main finacial backer is widmore I belive. Just as Hanso was to Dharma.Ovcourse widmore wants to get on the island. The island holds many secrets that Dharma built and created and many secrets that where there long before Dharma set foot on that island. Secrets that where known to Widmore threw his connection with Hanso. I imagine in his death he was granted access to his files he had.

I've posted this in another thread but it seems relevant here also:

It has been confirmed through one of the "lost games" that a division of Widmore Industries is called The Maxwell Group, a group who is funding a project to salvage the Black Rock remains. More about that here: http://lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Maxwell_Group

Yep she has, what looks like, a wedding band on her right hand. She seems to cover it a bit with her left hand but it glistens pretty noticeably.

Just like in Our Mutual Friend, I think that Desmond and Penny are the main characters. I sort of think that the rest is similar too, in that there are certain key characters(Boffin=Jack?) that have been in on the scam for the entire time (knowing what is happening and not saying but aiding) and there are intricate connections between all of the characters.

Exactly. which means Des hasn't anything to worry about. Only if it was on her left hand ring finger.

I think if Penny was in on it, that would be the twist of the show.. I think her father was one of the few people funding Dharma and the people on the freighter are representatives of Dharma, sent by Penny's dad to retake the island..via Ben. I dont know if any of this makes sense right now lol..

Why wouldn't anything you are saying make sense right now ? haha late nite? So I watched part of season 3 last nite b/c I hadn't seen it since original airing. The last one I watched (before I passed out!!) was Flashes Before Your Eyes. I'm not positive about this timeline but I'm pretty sure the ring lady said "you will go on the next 3 years trying to find a way to win her back and then three years after that pushing a button" ok I'm going to have to go back and watch that, but if in 1996 he was trying to win her back, that wouldn't make any sense. He quits pushing just a few weeks before what's taking place in "real time" on the island, so it would have to be like 1998 wouldn't it? I'm going to go back and see but it seemed like a clue. Of course, after 6 hours of watching Lost everything seemed like a clue hahaha. Love being sick on the weekends!!

OOOk so I was hearing things she said that's what "drives you in a few short years to enter the race and then you spend the next 3 years pushing a button" darn.

I don't think Penny's in on it. I think she is too genuine and sincere.

Now mind you, I do not expect her or any other character to suddenly look at the camera and say, "I have that Desmond right where I want him! My plans for global domination are right on track! Dr. Evil, look out! Mwahahaha!"

But still, we as viewers can speculate all we want. But I think that Penny has as much of a reason to be devious as, say, baby Aaron does.

In defense of "Mo" I am keeping my options open.Who'd have thought Michael would kill?Locke would put a grenade in someone's mouth? Jack would become an alcoholic? Hurley would retreat to the nuthouse?Kate would be gaga over a baby?Sayid would be working for Ben?Sawyer would go with Locke?Aaron would wind up with Kate? One egg would be missing from the plateHaHa?Wasn't it Desmond who sat in the hatch for several years believing the other guy about the biohazard?Never questioning enough to take a chance? These do not bode well for getting too cozy with Penny's character, don't you think?Devil's advocate here, sorry. When the blind lead the blind they both fall into the pit!

Didn't Mankowski say that Penny had been calling and they couldn't talk to her?

skatertsol
03-02-2008, 05:05 PM
They were told not to answer that number right?! And she had been looking for the boat and Charlie's brief convo with her....I'm sure all of this would've brought back some memory of that conversation with Desmond about Christmas Eve 2004....right!? As the date was drawing closer and she was finally starting to "hone in on him" so to speak. Odd that it took that long to answer though!

Well I am trying to say that if Penny was in on all of it they would have let her call.

I was starting to think the same thing. The freighties were not supposed to answer if Penny called. But Minowski (sp?) did. Where the people giving the orders afraid of Penny? Or where they afraid of some using her to get to them and to the island? The missing piece is why did she take so long to answer. What/who distracted from getting to that phone? Arghh, the more answers we get it, the more questions arise.

This has all already been discussed in a few other threads. If you look up Penny's father on lostpedia.com you'll see that it was revealed that he's funding a project to salvage the Black Rock remains.

skatertsol

Right I had seen that before, and it was made super obvious at the auction that he had a definite interest in the Black Rock. I just think it will be interesting to see how it all plays out-what his intentions were originally in buying that diary, if he could in any way know that Desmond would crash on that island, etc. etc. If you were to take what we know now after this episode and lay it out chronologically, it's still a big ? to me as to why Charles Widmore is so interested in the first place (the auction being the first place I guess!) I mean, I'm sure it has something to do with involvement in Dharma or something....but why!?!?!

Her reaction to him calling her seemed too genuine to seem like she was in on it! But I did notice that photo on the monk's desk before of the lady with the white hair in Flashes before your eyes - freaky!
