I was actually thinking about that earlier today.... when des went to find him to get penn's address mr whidmore was biding on a ship log of the blackrock (the ship wrecked on the island) and the auctioner said the only person to read it was alvar hanzo... I was thinking maybe he was serching for the island and that book had some chart of how to get there. maybe mr whidmore sparked desmonds interest in the race and paid libby to give him the boat that could have had a tampered with gps or compass system. maybe mr whidmore knew that sending desmond there (a place with no comunication or random way out) would keep him away from penny permanatly. then he could tell her he died or something so she can move on. just a thought

ive always thought that whidmore had something to do with desmond on the island. im not so sure that he did it to hurt desmond though. there is something a bit fishy.. about how mean he is to desmond i think whidmore is behind a lot of stuff and that naybe he had to act a certain way towards desmond to get him to follow a path that would eventualy lead him to the island. I dont know maybe he somehow knows the future.

yeah he could have manipulated it somewhat - especially if he knew penny would try looking for desmond - an extra resource unwittingly looking for the same thing he is?

Yes, Pennys dad has a lot to do with it. I think he has desmond doing all the dirty work. Now that desmond knows where the island is dad can bargan with him for Penny. Only one problem desmond is a different guy so he wont remember where the island is.

i use to think that widmore wanted him there to keep him away from penny but now i think that he was using Des to find the island and penny will stop at nothing to find him and he also knows that.....i think that he wanted the black rock ledger for clues as to who was on it and info about those people

I think Whidmore bought the Black Rock book and then sent Desmond on that race with the Coordinates in the book for the Island.

im not fully sure but i think that desmond got all his memory back once he spoke to penny. it looks like around the time she mentions charlies name it all came back to him.

And yes, as Daniel predicted, Desmond making contact with his constant (Penny) anchored him in the present time, thus bringing back his normal consciousness. It's quite apparent that he remembers who Charlie is and obviously he remembers Sayid's name.

it will be interesting to see what daniel starts remembering now that he found the journal and knows that des is his constant...i mean he was a basket case when we first saw him crying over the news of 815 being found with no survivors...he couldn't remember a damn thing and ob his memory (short term esp) seems to be majorly affected
