I don’t think changing something in the past necessarily changes something in the future….
There is a past and a present…
They are two sides of a line
The present keeps going while the past is like a trail of mud you can go back to.. and the person leaving the trail and still walking is the future.
The thing here is anyone can go to the past because it’s already happened and you don’t have to worry about changing stuff… it’s like
A trail of mud… you can poke at it
So desmund is just in the past but in reality he’s in the present… his mind is traveling to the past
As for the future…
that’s a little more complicated
Depending on what has happened so far there is a prediction as to what the future is like… and people can have flashes…
It’s like being on a string and feeling vibrations on the string even tho something is touching it far away.
When people get flashes or dejavu is when they feel like they’ve been there before and your body remembers those vibrations ( information traveled along the line).
Maybe what daniel wrote was one of those flashes…
Everyone has had them… your mind all of a sudden see’s something… you feel a vibration of whats to come…and think nothing of it.
He was smart enough to write it down.
I know because I’ve done this before… I have a dream and later on be amazed.. Of course not every dream is a prediction and your mind wanders but sometimes… there is this vibration that just feels odd.
So the past can’t be changed but this means the future can…
Which to me makes complete sense.
If a series of events are happening and you feel a vibration ….
Your able to stop it in it’s tracks…
Hard to explain without a diagram.
Lets say the vibration or flash tells you someone will be eaten by some beast in the forest while it rains…
Your friends invite you to go hiking.. You think nothing of it
Your in a forest that seems familiar, you know you’ve never been there…you think nothing of it
AND THEN IT BEGINS TO RAIN…
Here is where you are seeing where the dominos are going…
Have you ever had that feeling?
And you say “This doesn’t feel right I think we should head back?”
Or ever thought “ I KNEW that was going to happen”
There is a line a:confused::confused::confused:nd there is someone walking on the line. There is the mudd that the person leaves behind. There is future shadows of possible events. The person walking is the present… so messing with the mudd isn’t going to change ANYTHING. Makes sense.

I think it is possible to change the future, just that it is hard to notice it has changed because it hasn't happened yet.

Also, I think the fact that Desmond couldn't remember anything between 1996 and 2004 is significant. Something like since he was in the past, and things could change because of influences from 2004, his future between 1996 and 2004 hadn't been written yet.

I'm nearly 100% certain that changing the past WILL NOT change the future on this show. Penny wasn't waiting for Desmond's call and Daniel didn't remember Desmond visiting him. Also, if Desmond visiting Daniel had truly allowed him to figure out the secret to this "time travel", than why would he still be so unsure about how it works 8 years later on the island? Answer: because Desmond never visited Daniel in the world that is the "present reality" of the show. The writer specifically said in an interview with EW magazine last week that they didn't want to have to deal with the concept of how going into the past will change the future, it would be too confusing. This concept of "consciousness" travelling into the past to interact with it, but not necesarily change it, is their solution.

Also, let's not forget, Daniel Faraday clearly has some memory issues. We saw this when he saw the Oceanic 815 on TV and couldn't figure out why he was crying. We also saw this with the card game with Charlotte. This is what I think that journal entry means: Daniel also has time travelled but has simply forgotten about it. This entry has nothing to do with Desmond going back in time and meeting him, he didn't write it as a result of that because that never happened in "present Daniel's" reality. He's simply discovering/remembering that he also has time travelled with his consciousness.
