i would like to point out that she is in fact a rat and not a mouse!
i am sure we would be pretty offended if someone mistook us for a chimp! (although i bet in some cases its real hard to tell the difference!)

Does Eloise count in the LOST death toll?
Let's have a moment of silence for the beloved character who devoted her life to science.:D

Good catch Misjulie. I hadn't thought about a subtle tie to "Flowers for Algernon". Still another intricate thread in the web!

Speaking of rats, I've had 2 rats and they make great pets altho they don't live that long maybe 2 years or so. When I took them to the vets everyone in the waiting room looked at me as if I had the black plague in that cage.Rats bond with you, talk to you, and keep themselves very clean. After you handle them THEY very carefully wash themselves !They have great memories and are very smart.

we had 15 rats at one point as one gave birth and had a litter of 9 - talk about super cute! one rat we had (her name was toots) was utterly demented and she outlived all her children - she had a zombie look about her by the end but she was a tough old gal!

I bawled like a baby when my rats died. I never ever thought I would get that attached to them, but I did. Fifteen rats is a lot of rats and the babies are cute. You must be an animal lover. You have to take a certain amount of abuse when you keep pet rats. Mine never went on a treadmill but they made the most cozy looking nests and shredded the paper to make a soft place to rest.

we never kept the babies - once they were weaned they went off to loving homes. our 3 boys used to like sleeping on top of the books in the bookcase i have some pics of them like that! and one of our girls (daisy) could get out the bars of the cage - you would be sleeping at night and then wake up coz you could feel someone snuffling at your face lol!
i remember when our first rat died - he had a stroke and i found him and i was sobbing my heart out then he started to move again - talk about mood swing!! but he had to take a little trip to the vet as he was really poorly and it wasnt fair for the little fella. oh man, i miss them so much :(

I know what you mean. I've never forgotten them because I feel they did more for me than I did for them. I've always felt a soft place in my heart because the wild ones do lead grim lives. I remember the one wild rat I saw tightrope-walking the telephone wires at night so it could climb down into my friend's garden. What a hoot!
