I don't think we should dismiss the wedding ring idea that easily. It is in fact a big freaking diamond gleaming in our face. If they didn't want us to think it was a wedding ring they would have chosen a more subtle ring and not made it so prominent. It also says on wikipedia that in some places in Europe wedding rings are worn on different hands.

i think that we "might" have agreed that it was indeed crackling ...i think looking back on the phone conversation and penny....we brought up how she was rubbing on the ring when her and des spoke..thats all:)

I'm watching the scene now and it just seems like the voice is Penny's voice distorted by the breaking up of the signal. This happens when you hear static during a cell phone conversation, you sometimes hear the voice of the person you're talking to in the static and it sounds very distorted as the frequencies in their voice are not being transmitted correctly.
