Could this be a simple flashback? Maybe it was Dan going back and forth w/ the sickness and when he says "I dont know" he really dont.

i think that daniel has used himself as the guinea pig with his time travel experimentation and he obv suffers from the effects.....and the radiation eff from it....when watching the news he knows that it holds some emotional/deep meaning for him but can't remember anything about it...so yes...i think that its a flashback of him....now with him realizing des is his constant...should be interesting to see if his memory improves...such a brilliant man but memory seems to suck from all the se's

Everything seems to be coming together somewhat.

i agree with you that he has used himself as a guinea pig!

Well, I posted about this elsewhere, but I really think it goes here... maybe Daniel is grieving because the losties DO get back through the "worm hole" or whatever it is, and all but six of them find out oops! they're the dead ones. So people he is meeting in the current episode may "come out of it" dead, if that makes any sense.

do you mean like in one reality they are dead and it one they're alive? that would be absolutely insane. I would be more than crying.

I really like Daniel so far. I was kinda thinking he used himself as a guinea pig too. I'm assuming that bit with the cards was either him trying to recover from what's happened to him, or cope with what is CURRENTLY happening to him. I'd figure it's something akin to his experiment to Eloise. Perhaps he found some way--or it was an accident--to only send a part of himself an hour or so into the future so that he more or less retains consciousness while in the present, similar to Desmond and his future visions. So in order to practice, he tells what's-her-face to pick three cards and show him in an hour, then proceeds to try to "remember" them right after she picks them an hour before she's supposed to show him. Then again, he could just be messed up and trying to recover, heh.

Maybe it has something to do with what Desmond said to him about protecting his head from radiation. He kinda gave that Daniel type smirk.

Yeah, I don't like it, really, but someone on another post was talking about wormholes and kind of crossovers to other realities, and it just made me think. Like, for example, Desmond is experiencing two realities right now... and we could think one was past and one was present, but it seems so much more complicated. If it is in the past, the "island Desmond" should remember that this all happened to him in 1996. But he doesn't. He's no longer "island Desmond" at all. He has no idea who Sayid is. It's as though he's a different Desmond from a different place/time/reality.

I understand the creators have said that the mystery of the show will NOT be time travel. That's also why I'm trying to think differently. If there are alternate realities, or parallel universes, or whatever, it would explain why Jack in the final episode is so desperate to get back to the island - maybe that's where the wormhole/portal is that he can use to get back to his other reality/universe. And get him out of his drug addicted, miserable reality. Maybe the island is a place where there can be accidental crossover to other "potential lives" you could be living...

Daniel said he was just transporting "consciousness". I think that's important. Maybe "island Desmond" and "soldier Desmond" are two different potential realities for him, and Daniel's system takes the consciousness of one and plops it down into the other one.

Sorry, I know it's dumb. Don't anybody hurt me, now! My family won't speculate with me, so you are stuck with these ideas.

Oh, I didn't even answer you, KarmaKate - I just mean that maybe people go thru the wormhole and when they get out, they are gone - yeah, dead - because dying in the crash was another parallel reality for them. So only the Oceanic 6 survived the crash in that reality. So it's not good for them to leave, since they will no longer exist. Maybe that is one reason Ben and Locke are so intense about nobody leaving the island.

Or another answer might be found in the scene at the lab. Daniel throws on the protective coat because of the radiation ....

Desmond: Do I get one?
Daniel: (paraphrasing - you don't need one but I do this 20 times a day)
Desmond: What about your head?

I had a good laugh on that one! :D

littlekinder- whether your theory is true or not it's very thought provoking, and I like that.
