But technically, Desmond's meeting with Faraday is changing the future, because that moment was the future of some other day.


Also, Des gets nosebleeds while on the freighter, because he hadn't yet found his constant. But he had already met Faraday in the past: he was the one who told Des he needs his constant. Why couldn't Faraday have acted as Desmond's constant? Even though Des didn't recognize Daniel at first, Daniel introduced himself when they talked on the phone. Des knew Daniel Faraday in 1996, and in 2004. Why did he need Penny?

He didn't have a strong connection to Faraday. Faraday said he needed something significant to him, which is when he asked if it could be a person.

....and syied also said 2 des...are u ok now ?....after he made contact with penny, so is desmond going 2 be ok since he "found" his constant...if that was the case shouldnt daniel already knew that desmond was his "constant"...if so what are the odds of the bering of the flight 815 was the same as the heli came in on...and if so....maybe desmonds bering was different than the 815 survivors since he was in the water in a boat, rather in the air...which could be a possibilty cause micheal and walts bering was diferent than the 1 that the heli used......so basically what im syaing is maybee there is more than 1 bering 2 get in2 diferent gaps of time...was the subs bering the same as micheal and walts....or the helis? or was it diferent altogether?

I hate time travel, theoretically it must be circular but in movies and TV it always "starts" but it can't. To truly be time travel without altering the space time continuum it must always be going on.

There can be no 'beginning' and you cannot change the future. Daniel wrote about Des in his journal. Remember when Daniel says "wouldn't future me remember meeting you?" Des says "Maybe he forgot"

yes...i think that his memory sucks cuz of all of the exposure to RAD since he used himself as a guinea pig in his time traveling experimentation....des was exposed to high Rad/EM when the hatch blew...

it's frustrating because the whole point of desmond 'traveling' between 1996 and 2004 was to save his life in 2004. the fact that he communicates with penny is icing on his cake.

in 1996 dan said des's constant had to be something des really cared about. penny was the logical choice at the time plus it created a tear-jerker moment for some viewers when they communicated in 2004.

there's a fine line in determining if he altered his future. had we known he was supposed to die on the boat like minkowski, we could argue he changed his future by 'traveling' back to 1996 and learning about constants. however, since the only future we know about des is what actually occured, it seems what he did was what he was destined to do. ie, his future actually included 'traveling' between 1996 and 2004. so his future wasn't altered.

I'm going with this is the way it happened and was always going happen. Both parties, Daniel and Desmond, forgot about the meeting prior to 2004. Dan did not recognize Des to exposure to high levels of radiation. Why Des did not recognize Dan is a little trickier. Perhaps it was the hatch explosion or maybe 2004 Des absorbed 1996 Des memories (long shot). Perhaps 1998 Des went loco and he convinced himself it was all an hallucination. The next time I see that cellphone-less guy carrying on a loud conversation with with the "invisible man", I'm asking for lottery numbers.:)

I agree. If one is to claim that the future was changed, the question becomes: changed from what? We are getting a look at what happened in 1996, we are not seeing a change from what should have happened in 1996.
