In Recon, Kate nearly took MIB's hand, but at the last second didn't. I believe that if you are touched by Jacob, then you aren't nessecarily a candidate, but you are bound to the Island, and to Jacob. He touched them, and changed their lives by binding them to the island. In the Flashsideways world, Jacob never touched them, therefore they never were drawn to the Island. Eventually, Kate and Jin will join with Jacob's team and fight the MIB. His touch, like Jacob's, has an effect. This could also be why Sawyer is neutral: he was touched by Jacob at the funeral, and by MIB when they were at the cliffs. I could easily be wrong about MIB, but i believe Jacob's touch is binding. It is also possible that in Sideways world, MIB is the Island leader, and Jacob is the smoke. And MIB never saw the need to find candidates, so he led the Island to it's destruction.
