View Full Version : Who's the "friend" on the boat?

We've speculated about the captain and about Ben's man on the boat. Who's the "friend" on the boat? Who's opening doors? Who's cutting every cable in the communications room? This boat has a lot of issues of their own!

The implication is that Ben's "man" on the boat is the same person who is cutting the comm lines and opening doors for Sayid and Desmond.

Let's see.....Who likes to open doors and cut cables, then disappear?A lot seem to think it's Michael or Walt. Walt could open a door with his telekinesis, AND that door was opened extremely quietly. Could there be a man on the boat who isn't Ben's puppet plus someone else who is?

I keep asking this in a bunch of threads but nobody answers! For people who think that Michael or Walt is either Ben's man on the boat or just the person who's sabotaging stuff, please explain how this is possible! I'd like to see a hypothetical storyline that would justify this. I, for one, just can't see any possible way that the freighter crew would welcome Michael or Walt on board and then not immediately throw them off board once stuff starts getting sabotaged.

I'm your huckleberry! M and W were given coordinates when they left the others and some seem to think those same directions could have landed them near the freighter. They could be in solitary confinement away from the others and the boat people do not know about Walt's ability to move things, etc. Maybe Walt's rather amazing gifts haven't been completely revealed yet. That's a nice little egg they're saving for later.Just some guesses.Happy trails!

i am not suggesting that michael is the saboteur - i think the freighter crew (sans michael) are on the ship as one team but are really split into groups - i think some are working for whoever commissioned the freighter initially, some are working for widmore and then some are working for abbadon. then i think we have michael/walt who was picked up by the freighter. i am not sure if he has told them why he was bobbing around in the sea on a rickety little fishing boat but i am sure he cant have mentioned being a survivor from oceanic as i am sure they would have mentioned that to the rest on the island either via the sat phones or via naomi. i like the idea that walt may be unwittingly sending information from the freighter via his gift but then there is also the chance that michael has been forced into doing it for some reason or another. the fact that its someone who seems to know the losties, also ties in with it being michael/walt.
i think the sabotage is an inside job.

Another idea. remember they said that the guys who died starting acting crazy?Well, why couldn't one of them have cut the wires as their minds started to disintegrate and not remember they did it?

I think if the writers are gonna put someone on Ben's boat, it's probably going to be someone we already know, like Michael. It could be one of the people we saw in the episode, it's very hard to know right now. I'm really surprised the Minowski guy died so early.

if it's someone we've seen i think it's Michael (and possibly Walt)... i think Walt would need to be there to use a bit of the force on the crew to get them to accept them (a la "These are not the droids you're looking for)...
perhaps ben guaranteed michael's safety if he did one last thing for him...you know how ben loves to add on those extra conditions to every promise he makes...

good point...although he might be too busy getting another tongue-lashing from the crew

I really think Frank is the guy on the boat. He seems to comfortable with the entire situation to not have some idea what is going on...

i actually thought it was frank that opened the door
i kinda think frank might be the sabator and bens man on the boat(pretty sure im wrong about that one though) but he never really doesnt seem to care to much for the island

i agree TQ.....i mean...im not saying its michael BUT...i think u have a point...i mean why build us up and build us up to who it is if it is some unknown......i think that michael came up cuz we keep seeing that his name is in the credits and so if so ....where is he??

Well, Frank does tell Sayid that he's trying to help him. It could be as simple as that.

i'm impressed so far with frank. he made his own deal on the island with sayid. he took a lot of heat bringing sayid and des to the freighter. like dan, miles, and charlotte, he seems to have his own agenda. i suspect walt and michael are on the boat, but until i see otherwise, frank is the guy helping sayid and des on the boat.
i will say i doubt frank was the guy who sabotaged the radio. he's a pilot and would appreciate having access to a strong radio. anyone could have sabotaged the radio once naomi told the ship she encountered the losties. i can see mr. widmore having his own crew sabotage the radio so the news of the losties doesn't get out. the crew still has the sat phones so they won't miss the ship's radio.

whats your explanation for it all?
Well thank you for asking! :D I personally think that Ben's man on the boat has either not been revealed to us yet or is someone on the freighter that we've already seen. Ben has so many resources and so many people working for him that why should we think it's someone we already know? Again, I think that the freighter crew are on very strict orders and are way too paranoid to allow someone like Michael, a complete stranger who they would be very suspicious of, to get the best of them. I think that if they picked up Michael and Walt on the boat they would have immediately locked them away, and again I think that if this was the case than we would have heard about it already because they would have mentioned it, particularly Minkowski. Don't you think that he would have mentioned to Sayid and Desmond that they had picked up two strange stowaways since he was telling them practically everything else that had happened? "Yeah we have a traitor among us, someone sabotaged our communication lines and we've been sitting out here for nearly a month....oh yeah I almost forgot to tell you that we picked up a father and his 12 year old son from a boat a few weeks ago, crazy huh?". If it does turn out to be Michael and/or Walt I'll be disappointed because it just seems so far-fetched and unrealistic, (and not in a time travel kind of way, just in a lame kind of way).
Also, I think it is quite possible that Ben doesn't even have a man on the boat in the first place. It could just be Frank who is helping Sayid and Desmond. Frank is quite unlike the other Freighter crew members, and he clearly is a good person and has sympathy for the plight of the islanders. He looked Sayid in the eye and said "I'm trying to help you out, trust me". I think it's very likely that we'll find out that Ben got his information from other means and that Frank is the one who's helping Sayid and Desmond.
Also, there's an interesting theory about Miles that I read which I'll be posting sooner or later, so keep an eye out for it.

it seems far fetched and unrealistic - on a show that has smoke monsters, time travel and faked plane crashes?
yeah, its TV! ;) :p

I will agree that I might be Michael or Walt on the boat, but why toss out Frank? We have seen little of their backgrounds except for David. We still have a lot to see to how the rest of the "four including me" Naomi newbies do or have done. I hope.

I agree with you. It is nice to hear someone thinking rationally for a change. I thought I was an idiot for thinking it couldn't be Michael, but finally someone else agrees. It would be too obvious and the freighter people would know that a small boat floating in the middle of the ocean with the only logical launching point being the island, and probably with DHARMA signs on the boat, that it would have to be losties. And Frank said he was on their side, so why couldn't it be him who opened the door?

It's one thing to include plot elements that defy science but that are still plausible given the rules of the world they're presented in, but to have Michael be the spy would defy the logic that is presented to us on the show. In the world of Lost, time travel and smoke monsters are a reality, but the freighter crew allowing themselves to be tricked so easily would be unrealistic. There's a difference between the suspension of disbelief and giving the writers the okay to throw illogical plotlines our way.

How about the russian fellow "mikhail"? Did he die also when Charlie was killed? Could he be
by some miracle on the boat?

The writers have said that Mikhail is truly dead this time, which is a shame because he was a cool character.

i honestly think its perfectly logical - people can be unpredictable, especially in times when their trust and instincts are being questioned. some people feel the court scene was illogical yet there it was!

Well I guess what I'm trying to say is that even though they include far-fetched and seemingly unrealistic things on the show, they always explain them rationally and make them seem possible in the world that they're presented in. If Michael and/or Walt are taken aboard the freighter and then the crew lets their guard down so much that they sabotage the mission and then they don't even suspect them, I think it would be pretty hard for the writers to explain that.

I like the micheal theory except for the fact that the Darma folks would know who he was and would not likely let them infiltrate their ranks. they seemed pretty carefull about who they selected for this mission, would they have just overlooked micheal?

For a while, I was convinced that Michael is the spy. But I'm definitely more inclined to think that he is the "friend" instead, with the two being exclusive of each other. But I really just don't know and am enjoying the ride anyway.
