View Full Version : nothing and no one is good or evil per se

i was just thinking that it is not the numbers or jacob or mib that is evil. nothing and no one in and of itself is evil. I think it is the power of the island in the wrong hands that can perpetrate a horrible evil on humanity.

This is much like Albert Einstein felt about the atomic bomb.

If MIB thinks that men are corruptible by nature and Jacob wants to prove him wrong - perhaps it is about the power/secrets of the island. Maybe both have been somehow given the job or granted the right or something to "protect the island," or maybe they are responsible for bringing the power to the island.

MIB wants to destroy it because he does not believe humanity can handle it. Jacob does not want the island destroyed and thus wants to prove that people do know the difference between right and wrong, so that the island can be saved. But he fully understands that humans are not yet ready. that is why the island is a cork, it keeps the power locked in there (the EM perhaps? or exotic black matter? or something with which science will have a field day - and then humans would corrupt with greed by time traveling, messing with the universe trying to change that which ought not be messed with) rather then out in the world where it can get into the wrong hands.

this is probably why jacob ok'd the DI purge. They were getting to close and needed to be stopped before they fully discovered and utilized anything from the island. This is probably why Widdy is there, to take over and harness the power. OR, widdy is there to stay the protector of the island so that no one gets to it when MIB leaves.

jacob has MIB trapped because MIB is the one who can truly judge people for who they are. Jacob brings them, smokey judges them to see who is already corrupted and who is potentially redeemable and the game begins. MIB tries to corrupt them and/or just lets them be who they are as humans and they corrupt themselves. Then they die. Of course, you can also die other ways.

since richard's arrival, jacob has taken to "guiding" the people he brings in the right direction.

MIB is sick of this and now it is not that he so much wants to unleash the power of the island on the world, but he is ready to either leave it in widdy's possession or just destroy carphole island altogether to be free. but he is the only one tasked with assessing whether humans are evolving at all. and that is why someone or jacob has hum trapped. he must do this job. isabella said STOP MiB. not kill. ilana would not let people shoot at him on the beach either. I think MIB leaving is post in any way - escape or death is bad news. But, not because he is evil incarnate. although, i think based on ab aeteurno, it seems like calling each other evil is jacob and MIB's little inside joke. and a double entendre to assess how the humans deal with evil and right and wrong.

so, the people that jacob brings to the island are those who are slated to die on earth and perhaps are even headed for the hell (although it would be weird if hell actually existed in the show). And, that is why isabella said if you do not stop MIB WE are all going to hell. the people on the island. because they were slated to go there anyway.

now, i think all of our losties are pretty good peeps. particularly hurley. so, i do not know why they would go to hell. but, perhaps the hell referred to was not the same one our religions discuss. idk. maybe that is just the belief that isabella had because of her devote Catholicism. perhaps what was meant, really, was that they were all going to die. course correction.

the valenzetti equation has something to do with the island's power. whatever it is, it is worse for mankind then any weapon of mass destruction to date, and it will inevitably be responsible for the destruction of humanity. the numbers represent the variables in the equation, our losties. they will probably have to sacrifice themselves to take down the island and save the world. but, it has to be one of the right combination of the variables (losties) based on causation of some sort that can make this happen. 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42.

I like the parts I highlighted a lot.
MIB is dead set on his view that humans can't handle the power.
Jacob is not, he believes in time they will evolve to a more peaceful being.
MIB wants Jacob dead to save the world, not destroy it.
The past has shown us that MIB is right on point.
All the destruction caused by humans and not just with war, but all the thoughtless things humans do to have more "comfortable" lives:
Destruction of the rain forest, horrible animal testing, slavery, rape, murder...I could go on and on but I think I made my point :)
It is prevalent in our history.
What on earth would we do with all that power?
Who would be the "manager" of that power?
There would be wars over that power for sure.
I have to say looking at it from your perspective I would say I am a MIB follower for sure. I agree we (the human race) could not handle it.

The cork analogy Jacob tells Richard about puzzles me though.
Jacob says if MIB gets the power that evil will be released. If MIB feels we as humans can't handle it why would he want to release it?
I could see if he (MIB) wanted control over it. That would at least ensure him that the power wouldn't get into the wrong hands....well hopefully anyway.

From their point of view, because they know what's going on, I could see how each of them could portray the other as "evil" to those brought to the island. Like you said, sort of an inside joke, but done to get their point across.

Your theory definitely deserves more thought, Thanks Rach :)

Thanks.

I don't think he wants to release it, i think he wants to destroy it to save himself and humanity. but, i think first and foremost he wants to save himself because he can no longer tolerate his job, so to speak.
i think that jacob does not want the power of the island/or the island itself destroyed simply because humanity cannot yet handle it. he wants to preserve both. and there must be some tie that keeps jacob/mib there together. MIB may be enslaved or bound to the jacob figure.

but i agree with what you said about the destruction that humanity is capable of.
