This may have been discussed before, but it's been bugging me for awhile and I was wondering what other's thought. Obviously, the island has some healing powers, whether from the electromagnetic force or something else. It stunted or got rid of Rose's cancer, allowed Claire to have her baby and live, healed Locke, and allowed Jin to get Sun pregnant. (I think there's one more, but of course I can't remember...) However, Ben's cancer almost killed him, and all the pregnant Other women on the island died. If it is in fact the electromagnetic force that caused the healing, why didn't it affect the Others?

Good point about Ben's cancer!! As for the pregnancy thing: any woman who is pregnant before coming to the island is able to give birth to her child and live. It's the women who become pregnant on the island that end up dying. And the crazy island has healed so many near fatal injuries.....crazy injuries like the harpoon Patchy took, the knife Naomi took (and managed to then climb a tree!!), the bullet Locke took from Ben.....etc.

I remember Ben being upset that he got that tumor too. Didn't Julie say something to him about it? Wasn't Ben surprised it happened?

In the show on Thursday, they made a point of showing Locke's back with a blood stain on it, and I think it was Kate that saw it. It struck me funny that they made a point of showing that.

i think it has healing powers but can it stay healed if you leave the island?

Ahh, I had totally forgetten about the pregnant thing. I really do need to brush up on seasons 2 & 3!

If the island is the healer, and if Jacob is the island or can controll the island, then perhaps he chooses who to heal. If he asked Locke to help him, I'm thinking that he may not like Ben. Therefore, he wouldn't have healed Ben's cancer. But who knows...that's just a bit of hopeful reasoning, and you never know what the real explanation will be. (or when we'll get it...) =]

This is what I think too! I think that Jacob/the island chooses who heals and who doesn't. Ben's cancer kept progressively getting worse while anybody else who had a cancer or any other illness would get better. Jacob/ the island definitely may not like Ben for some reason!
