Can someone try to figure out what's going on with the philosophers names (Rousseau, Locke, Hume...)

There's really nothing going on. I have a minor in Philosophy, (I'm not claiming to be an expert on philosophers or anything, just that I have a very basic understanding of the major ones), and I've studied Rousseau, Bakunin (Mikhail), Locke, and Hume multiple times over the years. Each of these people were pretty major philosophers and each specialized in certain areas, but they wrote so many significant things on so many vast topics that it's not as if calling someone Rousseau or Locke would say anything in particular about them. I'm sure someone could skim the works of these people and identify a few things they wrote about that would be relevant to the character that's name after them, but again since they've each wrote on so many vast topics that would just be because of coincidence. The writers did play with Locke's namesource in the episode Tabula Rasa since Tabula Rasa, or "blank slate", is a term that the philsopher John Locke coined, but other than that it seems to me that they're just fun little Easter Eggs. For example, the fact that Sawyer is named after Tom Sawyer and Walt named after Walt Whitman really doesn't say anything about their characters. Let me put it this way, if you can find any similarities between Walt and Walt Whitman post them here and I'll nominate you for President lol.

It seems they have changed from philosophers to scientist names lately.

I've said it before. My theory: they all got degrees in English, History, Philosophy etc. and couldn't find anywhere to express their knowledge in a profitable way....and along came Lost. The way to flex their educated muscle. signed-skatertsol, BA in English, severe student loan debtor, field of profession: one she could've gotten w.out the degree or bills. ;)

Haha I agree totally skater. Lost is kind of like a "popular science" article. It has all kinds of cool concepts in it but it's written at a level that anyone could understand. It's clear that the writers are having fun with all these neat concepts they learned in college when they were experimenting with Philosophy or Physics degrees and that's why most of the names we're seeing are of major figures that you would learn about in a 101 class lol. If people were named after really obscure and specialized philosophers or scientist then I think it would be easier to draw connections. But it pretty much just looks like they're having fun.

And toying with those of us that took more than the 101....I've got hung up on Vonnegut, Homer, Keller, and hit brick walls pretty much ;) However, it has made me want to go back in get my Master's because apparently I'm still interested in all of it!! Thanks again, Lost!

Me, too, with a BA in History and I don't wanna teach or go to law school...I could be a LOST "Plot Development Consultant". And since my love for Hawaii is even greater than for the show, I think I need to get out of New England and move to the North Shore of Oahu!!!

Hey! I want to add that one of the writers must have had a degree in religion.
There's just way too many faith issues and "zoom -gobby- gobby" stuff in Lost not to have a religion degree in there somewhere.. That's not a big money-maker usually, either!

Lost has a vast undercurrent between science vs. faith - I think it's just a plot device to use so many names from both schools of academia.

Perhaps there is something deeper there, but probably only insofar as showing who in the show is aligned with which side (Daniel Faraday is clearly a scientist and on the "science" side; John Locke is clearly on the "faith" side; etc.).

Whats odd is that the real John Locke was not a man of faith. He was a naturalist as was David Hume.
