Was just watching "The Constant" 2nd time and two scenes caught my mind.
One was when Des was with Dan in 1996, when Des regained consiousness(sp)...(des was sitting on the chair while dan was scribbling on the chalk board) Dan muttered that Des was out for 75mins while at the same time it was only 5 mins which Des experianced in 2004. I found that to be interesting.
Another part was right at the end when Dan was reading his journal. " If anything goes wrong, Desmond Hume will be MY constant" The underlined word "MY", shows that Dan knew about this in the past. Could be 1996 when he met Des. While Dan travelling towards the Island he lost his memory somehow since he experianced radiation/electro back in 1996 ("Side Effect"). Thus writting that down in his journal. Now that Des is Dan's constant, he wont get the side effect once he lives the Island.
Forgot to add this aswell. I think Des memory in 2004 has come back to him. He remembered Sayids name as I think once he lost his mind in the Heli Sayids name wasnt mentioned infront him.
Thoughts anyone....?

my brain is mush at this time of night...esp after a long weekend.....but i watched some of it over again also...the time difference of des being out 75 mins...vs 5mins in 2004 is VERY interesting.....i also think that yes Daniel made Des his constant cuz he was the one who traveled back to des and helped him succeed in his time travel exp with eloise so he meant alot to him....def i think that the amount of EM/rad des and daniel have been exposed to causes side effects when they leave the island...as i mentioned before...obv memory loss with both of them....ie....daniel back in scene where he saw news with finding of 815...he was crying but had no memory/idea why...i have to think more on that time diff for des in 1994 and 2004.....god its too late...lol:)

ok, 75 minutes in 1996 sleeping, out, not there. = 5 minutes in 2004..... I think that as the times grow, meaning 76 v 4, 77 v 3, 78 v 2, 79 v 1, died...

Daniel made Desmond his constant because he knew that he would need one in the future. I guess we also know why Daniel was crying when he saw the plane crash on TV. And this may also be the reason he is experiencing memory loss.

Des' memory loss wasn't a memory loss. The reason he appeared to lose his memory is that the '04 Des was replaced with the '96 Des and therefore the '96 Des was "Lost" when he went to '04. I don't know what happened to the '04 Des while the '96 Des was jumping back and forth from '96 to '04 and back but he went somewhere..
Did you notice that when the '04 Des finally did get to call Penny, they showed the '96 Des still outside of her Apartment and that he wasn't "out" like before when he jumped from '04 to '96 and vice-versa? Therefore both Desses were back in their normal time. That was an indication that both of them were back in the correct year.
Doesn't that make sense?

and when the '04 Desmond was talking to the '04 Penny. The '96 Desmond seemed to smile, like he knew that the '04 Desmond was talking to the '04 Penny.......

I think his choice of Des was as simple as He knew that he would be in contact with Des at a point in time when having a constant could be necessary.

Yes. The fact that Des outside Penny's apt smiled indicated that he sensed everything was okay once the phone call went through.
