Follow the time line up to the island sinking and you will figure out that Ben and his father were part of the evacuation order. My problem is that the Others would have had no such way off the island and therefore when the bomb went off ... Eloise and Charles should be dead. Also, Daniel Farday was already dead, so I see no way for him to be in the alternate time line. The explosion should have only caused a rip from that point. There is no logical reason I can come up with for those people being alive.
The bomb was only suppose to prevent future stuff from happening, I don't see how it could effect the past as well.

I think its possible that the bomb didnt even go off. The Island probably sunk at a different time. Faraday was dead, but Eloise was also pregnant with him. The Islands past was Faraday's future.

I think the changes go back far before the bomb incident. To me it seems more like what would have happened if Jacob and MIB were never on the island. Either way though, for all we know Whidmore has never even been on the island in this timeline.

1. The bomb did not create the ALT timeline.
2. Eloise/Daniel = "whatever happened, happened". She intentionally raised him to go to the island to one day shoot him. Season 5 shows us that.

I think that you're possibly missing the point about the bomb. I've posted this elsewhere, but I'll post a recap again.
Bomb destroys the swan in 1977 = button is not there to be pushed = plane doesn't crash = losties don't go back in time = bomb never gets buried = bomb is not used on the anamoly = anomoly still exists, button still exists, plane still crashes, losties do go back in time.
So the whole sequence doesn't work without a paradox.
so this leads me to believe that the alt is not JUST the bomb blows up the swan, but that it has it's own history that MUST be different than the history of the original timeline. Given that, Ellie and Charles could have left the island at any time.
Maybe the bomb through radiation leakage killed a bunch of the "hostiles" and they decided that it was best to leave.
I'm sure that we will get a better understanding of this in the next couple episodes.

I see what you mean about the sequence of events and I guess that merely assuming the island is under water from the bomb is a stretch. Perhaps something happened after the bomb to sink the island which would have given Charles and Eloise a chance to get off the island.
I would hope that they would provide some explanation for this before the series ends ... I don't want to have to watch a "Behind the Scenes" DVD to figure this out.

It would be something if Sawyer ran into say Horace Goodspeed, or Chang, and they called him LaFleur and remembered him. Faraday said he detonated a nuke, yet he never returned to the Island to do so. Flash sideways is simply another timeline, with no losties and possibly Jacob, so everything is different. They are meeting loved ones from OT, and are remembering their counter parts memory. I think they will have to do something in sideways to effect current OT events.
