I heard that he wrote a book called island which is said to be where some inspiration for lost came from. as i looked down what he has wrote i noticed a short story called jacobs hands
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob%27s_Hands%3B_A_Fable
the jacob in the story has a very similar trait to one the jacob on the island is supposed to have
i think this is interesting and i haven't seen it mentioned before so thought i would share

Dessie- You have made an amazing discovery! Aldous Huxley wrote Island and put forth these themes which dovetail with Lost;
Group living(Mutual Adoption Clubs)so that children wouldn't have unalloyed exposure to their parents' neuroses= The others take the children.
Trance states for super learning=Karl in the chair in front of the "message".
Assisted reproduction=Hatch where pg women/babies are hoped to be saved.
Dangerous climb to a temple as a sort of spiritual preparation=Others are told to go to the temple.
These themes have the opposite purpose/effect in Brave New World.thanks for the astonishing reference. :)

Huxley was also the real life friend of the real life richard alpert. on the island richard alpert is the guy who found young ben in the jungle and who doesn't seem to age. i think Island will have many more aspects that will be in lost. i might pick up a copy and see

That's even more amazing! I will get a copy if the library has it. I devoured Brave New World. The movie THX1138 was like the book. That was a super movie esp. the ending. One of Robert Duvall's early films.

Nice discovery! I found this website, http://www.huxley.net/island/index.html and it talks a bit about the types of stories he wrote leading up to Island. Kinda interesting. I'd walk over to the library but I think I have overdue fees lol
Sidenote: Huxley also wrote Heaven and Hell/Doors of Perception~which is where the band came up with their name! Gotta love Jim Morrison.

I love the reference to something called flame on that site. it holds the universe together. perhaps something to do with the flame station? it did kinda keep the others in contact with the outside world and give em info on the survivors which is kinda kept their plans together. without it they wouldn't have had a clue about who the losties were or how to manipulate them

Wow there real people trying to do that! i keep noticing exploding population on these sites. Thats one of the factors in the equation mentioned in the lost experience the DHARMA initiative is trying to change. What they are trying to achieve is exactly that the DHARMA initiative is trying to do in order for humanity to not wipe itself out
http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Valenzetti_Equation
that explains the DHARMA initiatives motives better than can

Have any of you ever read Brave New World? I know the Island is the last and as I mentioned before the "end" of what his other books lead up to. I just remembered I actually have that book but haven't read it in forever. Guess I'm eating some beer bread and reading some Huxley tonite. Thanks for the link, dh, have you seen this before? http://www.valenzettifoundation.org/

I'm also seeing many similarities between lost and Huxley's book After many a summer. In the book a man fearing death research the secrets of long life. Its just like in the lost experience with the life extension project

Went to the Island web site and took the quick tutorial on Chaos theory or dynamical instability. Thanks! If everyone read it it would help to explain why there is a degree of uncertainty in any measurement and no real measurement is infinitely precise. The trip to the island, the trip from the freighter, etc., will include a degree of uncertainty in the value, etc. go to Skatersol's thread and pick up the site. Take the Chaos theory tutorial. Thanks, S. so much more is there must pick and choose!

Ok well if you are seeing similarity in other works you are not alone. I'm starting brave new world and well couldn't stay off of here. I'm reading the foreword; Huxley wrote years after he originally wrote BNW. he's talking about how he gave the Savage two choices: To live in Utopia insane, or live teh life of a primitive in than Indian village, but if he had the chance to rewrite it he would give a 3rd alternative: The possibility of sanity-in a community of exiles and refugees from the Brave New World. (hmm...sound like the isle of LOST?!) Also, opening scene is in the FERTILITY ROOM. ok so I'm just starting this book; if I'm totally off I apologize I will keep reading. And BB-glad you liked the link! You've got more into it than I have thus far. The first link I clicked lead me to an article-about the Silicon Valley mogul that was lost at sea on his sailboat. too freaky had to walk away ;)

Interesting sidenote, Huxley is the descendant of Thomas Huxley, colleague of Charles Darwin....Also, the after being introduced to the Fertilizing room, the Director of the HATCHeries comes in. spooky. Ok I'm just reading too far into all of this (but such fun!)

that website has some really interesting stuff on. There is a lot of stuff on there about real life life extension projects just like in the lost experience. a lot of whats talked about on there would fit in with the atmosphere of the show

....With all the comparisons to his writings that have been made in the past....I was on Ram Dass' website...http://www.ramdass.org/Biography/tabid/331/Default.aspx not only do they talk about Dass' "dharmic" take on life after he gave up the life as Dr. Richard Alpert, but it also talks about how he works w/ Aldous Huxley. Hmmm. I <3 my Lost writers
