Its been bugging me for a while. Why out of all the things ben must know about the island and its history does locke ask him that? Not why does jacob's cabin move? Or why can i walk? the monster hasn't even been in the show for a while.

I was wondering that myself. BTW, I'm sure Ben DOES know, but is being deceptive.

He must know. Same as Juliet must know what it is. I think the monster may be the key to getting off the island hence the secrecy from them

maybe he asks as he did see it twice but both times were different and also, its really the immediate threat as its so unpredictable. maybe once he has a handle on that, he can then get to all the other issues?

of course he knows, i cant imagine anything on that island that he doesnt know. i 'spose the writers just planned it that way...ask about the monster, black cloud,,whatever. we as the viewers have tons of questions to ask,,just what the writers planned on, right ? :D

Don't forget that Locke had stared directly at the monster and supposedly "seen into the heart of the island itself". We were never told just what Locke saw, but from that point on he started acting like he understood that there was a greater purpose to everything that was happening on the island.

Mr Eko once said he saw the monster as dark, whereas Locke said he saw bright or white light at some point. Anybody remember this? My memories are sketchy, but I think there is something there.

Perhaps he asked ben in the hope of ben saying something like the monster is controlled by jacob why dont you ask him? this would give Locke an idea of what to do next as he was clerly out of ideas when the cabin wasn't there

yes the first time he sees it, its like a white light and then the second time he is attacked by it.

Well.... smokie is a very intersesting character.... wouldnt you wanna kno what it is? i mean, he can communicate w/ jacob already. he knos what the hatches are all about. the one thing he doesnt kno is about smokie, an anything he dont kno, kills him!! the others dont seem to kno either

I really think there is two monsters on the island. It seems odd that there is so much black and white in the show. i think there is a white monster which is good, perhaps it heals people. then there is the black monster which judges people and kills them if they are not remorseful for their sins

The black smoke is a bully and Locke is a victim. There's a magnetic dance between bullies and victims. Just look at any playground and you will see the kid who complains the most about the bully often being drawn to him or her like a magnet. Same with the bully. It's hard to tell who is inciting whom. So. is Locke afraid and is he seeing the monster as some attractive but scary force?

If my idea was true i think you would have to earn being healed. Locke had a unlucky life. he was always nice to people but ended up being hurt unfairly. the white monster would have seen this and given locke the use of his legs back. This effect would only happen on the island though explaining why locke wants to stay

Well, that could be it. We sure would like to know. I looked up your Aldous Huxley reference and found some themes in his book Island that were uncanny in relation to our Lost series. Very good reference there, thanks! I wish everyone would take a look at it-fascinating!

Locke has said that he is a protector of the island and feels he has a bond to the island. As such, he is driven to learn everything about the island and the mystery of the smoke monster elludes him. He probably thought the fear of imminent death would provoke Ben into disclosing this mystery. Remember that Locke has been played by others all his life. Now he is being played by the island and Ben.

I agree with what everyone is saying about the key to knowledge in the smoke monster; and as said before, Locke's discovered most of (at least what we've seen thus far) the island's mysteries. He needs to talk to the island, as he mouthed to Charlie (when he couldn't talk) back in S3 before he saw Boone. I think he's tying up loose ends and fighting against everything that is trying to take him off the island-and unlocking the smoke monster's mystery is what's left. I wouldn't be surprised if he tries to "make nice" with it to combat invading forces (the freighter team) that may ruin his chances of staying on the island and thus killing ending his freedom from the wheelchair.

Good question! I'm not sure why, maybe because he feels like there is no answer to the fact that he can walk, that he takes that just as it is, and that he can find out for himself in time about anything to do with Jacob, but the monster being dark for some people and light for others might be harder to understand because Eko seemed like a good guy to him.
