View Full Version : Other worlds

So after having watched this past season of Lost so far, do any of you ponder at the possibility of other worlds/universes/timelines/whatever? Wonder what things might have been like had you made different choices, or were born into different situations? Have any other shows, movies, or stories dealing with a similar concept effected your views?

Jeremy, I can totally open my mind to imagine it and in many ways do believe it to be true. I believe that when we die our souls, which are energy, "dance in the cosmos." That may not make sense to anyone but it does to me. So, keep an open mind.

Oh definitely, dude. Think about it all the time. I wonder even down to the smallest details in my life, not just huge events. I mean, yeah, if I wouldn't have chosen to move to a certain place at a certain time, would I have met a certain person? Or would I have met the certain person regardless? Some times events seem random, but are they really?
For example, I have 4 children. Would those children be alive if I wouldn't have met the certain person? And if I hadn't met the person, how would other peoples lives be different because they would not have met my children? It goes on and on, so many millions of thread on the tapestry of interwoven lives.
I take it down to seconds though sometimes too. I.E. I leave the house to go to work, then turn around to go back home because I forgot my cell phone. While travelling to work I see that there is a fatal accident on the highway that just occurred. I wonder, "If I wouldn't have forgotten my cell phone and returned home, that could have be me in the fatal accident."
Ever think like that?

If there are many other worlds/universes (multiverse), I propose that humans are an anomaly. If there are many worlds then they would have been around and or expanding since the beginning of time. There would probably be more worlds with dinosaurs on them than humans.

Life would not necessarily form the same elsewhere in the universe as it did on earth. Just look at life near methane vents at the bottom of the ocean. It was never have believed to be there due to the conditions, yet life evolved. It is completely different. This is the kind of life that could evolve on other worlds if they have methane based atmospheres. Just saying a possibility.

That happened to me. I was late on my sales route one day and realized I wasn't going to make to RR crossing in time to beat the train that came by there every morning at the same. So I went to another stop first. If I hadn't I would have died along with 11 other people who were at the crossing when a truck driver tried to beat the train. He was carrying a tanker full ammonia which ruptured and killed and injured dozens of people. (But not the driver who was sentenced to 10 years in prison.)

So far every place we've looked where there can be life there is. And like you said some where we didn't think it was possible.

Anything is possible. I live for the moment. Try to make each day special.
My concern is if there ARE parallel worlds out there, I hope I live in the one where peace IS the ultimate answer to everyone's problems. I may sound like an idealistic hippie, but I truly believe peace is the ONLY answer.

Sure, I'd advocate for peace, and I'm sure a lot of others would, too, but I think at least in this world it's a lost cause. If people keep fighting amongst themselves over trivial things like race, religion, sexuality, etc., the world probably will end in 2012(at least for humans, anyway).

I have to disagree Jeremy. If there is a catastrophe in 2012, it may bring humankind together once and for all.

Yes Boutte, a supreme consciousness. I think that our souls are made up of energy and we all remember from school that energy can neither be created or destroyed. Our hearts and muscles work from an electrical charge. It has to go somewhere when our physical form ceases to exist. I think that perhaps it is all intermingles as one and maybe that is the "supreme consciousness" but am not sure. I am sure though, that we dance with the stars at some point. It can explain that feeling of knowing someone your whole life the first time you meet them or other deja vous moments. I believe our consciousness comes back many, many times. This is why people talk about somebout someone with an "old soul." We are all made of stardust and primordial hydrogen. :D

Pffttt. Not a 2012'er here at all.
I wish I had the patience to fully understand the theories of quantum mechanics and superstrings. Although I'm schooled in science (I actually did pretty well with the study of physics), my mind doesn't seem to have the right references to grasp this stuff very well. Everybody walks around with their own unique model of the world in their minds. And some "models" lend themselves to understanding certain things easier than others... some people are fortunate whereas these esoteric concepts and theories are understood with little effort. ;)
From what I've come to know, I'm not alone--a lot of people have trouble fully grasping quantum theories. Based on this, I'll have to bet that the LOST final explanations will either omit this depth of complexity, or find a way to achieve a "dual explanation"--one that is easy to understand for the average person, but then also touches on enough to satisfy the heavy science oriented folks. :)
About 2012, I've heard about so many of these "scheduled apocalyptic moments" over the years and in history long ago. 1900 was supposed to be one of them. And then, so was 2000, and 2001. Still nothing. Of course, the Mayan calendar has its highly significant ending cycle of 2012. And there's supposed to be a few other references. Some have said "2012 has the strongest support for the apocalypse" than any other time in history. Really? I mean, is Nostradamus also aligned with this date? I'm still very skeptical...

They have been shown a "dual explanation" all along. If you are looking for it, as Jacob said about the lighthouse, you will see it. :)

Eh, I was just using 2012 as sort of an example. If anything happens then, I think it will be more a product of mankind rather than any sort of natural disaster.
I think Lost has done a good job at "dual explanations." There's all the science stuff that Notso seems to be into, and yet I think at least most of us understand at the very least what is going on. Notso could explain all the details about how and why Desmond could time jump, all we need to know is that he can and does due to having been in the Swan.

I feel deja vu all the time. I meet someone, and KNOW i have met him/her before. When you connect with another human soul in a special way, it reconfirms the belief that souls or whatever have interacted before, in a previous lifetime or, yes, a different world altogether. New age nonsense? Not for me. It's all about positive energy, giving and receiving to anyone you ever meet. It's quite simple really, I wish people would abandon their inner and outer drama, and understand life is so very precious.

Yes, it is all about our energies. Totally agree with you on that. Short story, I once met someone I had never met before, at their surprise birthday party. I went on a lark with a friend because I had nothing else to do and was convinced to go. When I walked in I saw this person sitting in a chair in the middle of the room. I turned to my friend and said that I was going to marry him someday. My friend thought I was out of my mind. Three years later, we married. So, yes, we had met before and our souls had danced through the universe and we already did know each other from "before."

I do sense some fascinating architectures to the LOST story, which I didn't quite get when Season 4 got started (I dropped off at that point). It wasn't until towards the latter half of Season 5 that I came back on board. It's amusing to see some people so fed up with LOST, feeling like it's all random and thrown together, with no long term objective. I definitely see it all coming together. LOST is a very unique series, unlike any other. And probably will be so for a long while. Cuse and Lindelof are exhausted from it, and despite all the celebrating they're very much looking forward to the break. Well deserved!
Notsolost, do you know of any "remedial quantum physics" websites on the Internet that you could point us "lesser understanding" folks to? I would like to "get it", the full deal. :)

I always seem to have the number 222 follow me around. I can wake up in the middle of the night or just gaze at the clock during the day and it is 2.22! It shows up everywhere for a while and then it is gone. Someone once told me it had to do with a spirit hovering around me. IDK. I guess it certainly could. It is bizzare. Or how about those big streetlights that suddenly go out as you drive past them. What are the odds, eh? Happens to me all the time, too.
I had heard a neural-biologist describe deja-vu as a benign anomaly of the brain, whereby "current" events being observed are simultaneously recorded in both the short term and long term regions of the brain. Thus, you experience the moment as if you had done it before. So far there has been no documented case of someone who experiences deja-vu fairly frequently to be able to recount any events or statements made by others before they happen. This would confirm that deja-vu is a kind of quantum experience.
However, I do not dispute that a "familiarity" with a person or a place (not specific sequence of events) could have some other metaphysical connection to a person. For me, it has usually been a visual similarity to someone else I've either known or seen. I definitely wouldn't mind having a kismet experience... feeling like the woman I just met is "it." ;)

OMG!!!! L O L ~ That magnet man freaks me out!!!!
Speaking of other worlds... Ben Underwood (http://www.benunderwood.com) was a young man who was completely blind and used sonar echolocation to find his way around. He had a rare form of eye cancer that forced the surgical removal of his eyes at age 3. About a year later, he began to "see" things through sound. And then at age 7, he realized that if he clicked with his mouth, he'd be able to see things that weren't making noise. Totally self-taught, he developed the ability to navigate around without the aid of any devices. It's an incredible story.
Ben Underwood - The Sonar Echolocation Kid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLziFMF4DHA&feature=channel)
(I think if you follow it through to the end, each of the 5 parts comes up sequentially).
This series of videos was made when Ben was 14, back in 2007. It was a very optimistic display of human adaptability. Ben had quite a future ahead of him. Unfortunately, he ended up dying at age 17, because the cancer he had escaped when he was a child returned and claimed him. It's such a sad ending to a hopeful life. But his example of overcoming the obstacle of blindness may serve to help others. If young blind children could be taught how to use echolocation, they might be able to develop the same abilities that Ben had. It would be a remarkable ability to help them cope with the handicap. And Ben will have left behind a lasting legacy to help many people in the future who unfortunately start out blind.
