Hi, First post - im in a B&B and was bored so decided to watch Ep 5 again and browse for lost things :)
It twigged when i watched it the first time and ive just got to about 24 mins in when Des is flashing the light in his eyes, trying to "go back".
Sayid is saying "...Desmond..." and bed-tied Minkowski (Radio operator) says:
"your desmond(?); <Des speaks> i'm George Minkowski, im the communicatons officer. before they strapped me down here, all the calls to and from this boat came through me, in the radio room... and every so often; id get this flashing light on my console, an "incoming call" - we were under strict orders never to answer it <Des speaks> Thoes calls came from your girlfriend... Penelope Widmore"
Jumping back (in Lost syle with a wooosh), in "The Looking Glass" station, was there not a flashing light on the console marked "incoming call"?
Given that the boat dosnt look all that new and fresh (as you may expect from something Penelope-ish) is it possible that the communications console is the same in the boat as in The Looking Glass? Is it then possible that these people are Dharma, or the boat is theirs, or these is some similar link, eg. Minkowski was once on the looking glass, he was Ben's spy, these boat people have Dharma equiptment to help find the island.
I'm just thinking that if Penny's signals were intercepted by The Looking Glass and the boat, they must have been simmilarly tuned/designed. A screen print of The Looking Glass console may show if a light correspends to "incoming call"
Let me know your thoughs.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was common to have a visual beacon on a ship's communication stuff, who knows.
Interesting thoughts on Minkowski though. If he was discovered to be Ben's spy that could explain 1) why he tried to get to the island and 2) why he would be tied up (after cutting the communications stuff) and 3) why they didn't want to talk with him.
Also, wouldn't a communication's officer be the perfect person to gather info from the outside world to get to Ben?
Hmmm...

Hi, your first post was a good one.
I am guessing that as Minkowski describes teh flashing light that he views it as somewhat remarkable or unusual, so i don't think he has seen the looking glass station. If this white light was common or standard on ships communication systems, he would probably describe it differently.
I am going to take it at face value that they have him retrained for the reason stated and not as a prisoner, as it would be kind of reckless to put Des in teh same room as a prisoner. The freighters seem pretty cautious of Sayid
I don't know anything about communication systems

Have skipped back through ep 5. You can see the console when Sayid first enters the radio room and looks at the eqiptment, you get a great shot just as Des comes back from a time jump, as he wakes and says "...turst me", the shot skips to look over Sayid's shoulder...
Des is sitting below an almost identical wall mounted console. The yellow light we see in charlies shot is replaced with something that looks like a car SatNav. This something looks like a bolt-on uprade as its curved and shiney but the rest of the console is angular and green.
The panels are otherwise identical!!!
The set people cant have gotten lazy for a piece of equiptment which has been used twice!? i'm thinking that they are above that.
Assuming the set people havent mucked up, then the equiptment has came from the same place.
I wouldnt imagine that the engineer who designed and built The Looking Glass bought his consoles from the same cataloge the person who built the boat did.

ps. sorry, im having probs taking screen prints - perhaps from the descripstion, somebody can lift a shot from Ep 5, at 37 mins (of 42mins)

What about this thought?
Minkowski was ordered to never answer those communications. He knew they were from Penelope Widmore, Desmond's girlfriend.
1. How did he know Penny is Des's GF?
2. How did he know the calls were from Penny? Did he answer one? Or did "The Boss" tell him who they were from (that would be foolish from a leadership point-of-view)?
3. Could the reason these transmissions were ordered never to be accepted because they were from *gasp* a different time period, thus possible causing catastropic space-time anomalies?

Charlies console in "The Looking Glass" - Many thanks XmasDVD

The console in the Boat which looks very nearly idential, apart from the thing that looks like a SatNav

<Edit> Ive also noticed that the boat has a beacon above the comms console which is of similar style to the one on the looking glass (in the red box ive put round it)

I am truly convinced they are the same console.
Reasons i feel for this (in no particilar order)
-Set recycling - design error
-The boat used to belong to Dharma
-The boat does belong to Dharma and these people still run it
-Extraordinay coincidence in engineering design
-It has been found from somewhere and installed to help seek out the island

Hi Snape,
Just thinking about your questions, my suggested answers/resosning would be:
1: Perhaps a figure of speach, research/duediligence the boat people have carried out on this person that keeps calling
2: He must know some how. Perhaps there was audio or something, and she said "hi, its penny, is des avaliable?" I'm thinking that they were told not to answer many times and it came out in the end. I'm thinking its more likley that they answered when the call came in the very first time and they got worried.
3: If the boat and call came from 2004 then there should be no issue. Unless they thought penny was calling from the island, so what you say may be correct.

Great pics. look like the same consoles to me. The most obvious conclusion is that the boat is owned/designed by the same people who built the Looking glass. Most of us would assume Dharma but I would not be surprised to see another player involved.

1 - The boat is Dharma and thats why they want Ben - he killed everyone.
2 - The same person who funded Dharma is also funding the freighter mission but the two are unrelated.

I dont think its Dharma. I think its a seperate company funded by Charles Widmore. Which is why he is referred to in the episode when he buys the notebook.
On a side note, i think this topic has been run aground. I used to do this with Alias, over-analyze things, when things werent as mysterious as I thought they were.
I really think Penny was waiting for the phone call, that was the whole point of the scene. To think otherwise is to overthink it.
But hey thats the fun of the show right? :)
